Meriam Ibrahim: Sudan 'to free' death row woman

    From the BBC:

Sudanese authorities are to free a woman who was sentenced to death for having abandoned the Islamic faith, a foreign ministry official says.

Meriam Ibrahim, who gave birth to a daughter in custody, will be freed in a few days, the official told the BBC.

This is encouraging news. Still, one should wait until she is actually freed. Moreover, it would probably be safer for she and her family if they were able to move to a more tolerant country.

Finally, it should be noted that one of DP's moderators, Serenity, had posted a link by which people could contact Sudan's government on the matter. While it's unclear how many such messages were read by the government, every bit of pressure almost certainly made at least some contribution to what appears to be a possible satisfactory resolution. I believe positive examples of civic engagement in a world where apathy is all too common deserve some degree of mention.

The sooner she is freed, the better.

    And that's an understatement.
