US soldier freed from captivity in Afghanistan

I think you are mistaken.. The man with the beard was his father...

I haven't done any research on this but maybe his dad was a deserter.

Does anyone know?

Maybe it's a family tradition.

But you know as well as I do that while most of us would be happy seeing him in the stockade while he waits on trial, there's that vicious court of public opinion. And you know as well as I do that sometimes, it's better to let things go.

Don't get me wrong - if they have enough evidence of desertion, then he should be tried, absolutely! For instance, I'm all for Bradley Manning spending his (now her) entire sentence in jail. He meant to do the right thing...but hurt American standing around the world instead, and almost certainly got more than a few people killed.

But if the Army's case against this POW is not airtight, they know how the court of public opinion would play out...and how it might be better for all concerned to just let it go.

I disagree. If there is truly evidence that any of this is true, that he walked off post and soldiers were killed trying to find him, then he should be court martialed and all witnesses questioned and all evidence presented. If he is not proven guilty, then he should be released..I have the funny feeling that mental illness will be brought up, but not sure how that would affect a military trial..

A lot of things that should happen will never come to pass.

This man will never be put on trial but, on the other hand, no one will ever pin any medals on his chest.

Some people will never accept that, but me, I'm just going to move on with my life and look at the 5 years that he spent confined by the Taliban as a down payment on what he owes those who suffered and died because of his actions.

"What goes around, comes around."

BTW: It doesn't really matter, but based on what I know right now I have zero sympathy for this guy.

I do have some for his family, they didn't ask to be involved in this kerfuffle.

Apparently we DO negotiate with terrorists. Of course we're glad to get this soldier back alive, but not at this cost. How many soldiers will these released Taliban kill? How many soldiers will now be hunted for ransom? What other unintended consequences will increase the threat to soldiers because we gave into terrorist demands.

State Dept:

If you cared about the lives of American soldiers you'd be advocating that we leave afghanistan and not that we leave one of them to have their heads chopped off on TV.

Just a heads up. Promoting POWs while they are still in captivity has been the US military policy since at least WW2 so you are way off on that. Look up US Navy CPT Stocdale from Vietnam. Or General Wainwright from WW2

With that said I would have no issues had they not promoted this turd and hope he is eventually punished for desertion.

Do you have any other examples besides of Stockdale and Wainwright ? I didn't think so. And Gen. MacArthur did go public about Wainwright.

Both were political.

Glad to see you are at least making an attempt of learning history.
Keep educating yourself.
You might find out that someone who served before you is why you are still alive today.

You are correct Juanitia.

I have the balls to say I'm mistaken and stand corrected.

You are correct, it is the father of Bowe Bergdahl.

But this could be worse for Obama. The Bergdahl's sure don't look like they ever voted smart in their lives.

Wow, so many things to criticize and you go with how they look. That is low of you.

Congress could also act by cutting off funding and military assistance.

Not really DS and not for this matter.....all due to BO not bringing the matter before Congress. The 30 day notice is minor. It whats he has to point out how these Taliban leaders and Terrorists have been mitigated. Compromised and will not be bringing anything back our way.

I concur, but the accusations from those with in Bergdahl's unit were made five years ago.

The Army has had five years to look into the matter. Dereliction of duty on the Army's part ?

Why was this guy Bergdahl (don't even want to refer to him as a soldier) promoted twice in rank when he was being classified by Obama's DOD as a POW ? This is totally unheard of in the past 236 years in America's history. Something stinks.

Technically, isn't Bergdahl still in the U.S. military ? Why was he allowed to keep wearing his Taliban beard while being honored at the White House yesterday ? Definitely a violation of Army regulations here. Something stinks.

Aren't Berdahl parents known lefty anti war/military activist ? Nothing smells here.

Heya Apache. :2wave: Has any brought why he was promoted twice? Are any defending these promotions. Did any bring up the Rolling Stone Article from those who had served with Bergdahl?

This guy was actually walking around in uniform talking about.....How the US Military was a Joke. Constantly talking Anti Military talk. They have his comments even reported to Officers. Yet they still promote him while in captivity?

Apparently there's more to this dude than the press is letting on. He sounds kind of screwy.

Read about whom they gave up for this guy.

I guess he wants to free all Gitmo prisoners.

Yeah -that's SOP. Not only do you get promoted while you're a POW, but you get promoted non-competitively.

Bergdahl said:
...“I am ashamed to be an American. And the title of US soldier is just the lie of fools,” he concluded. “I am sorry for everything. The horror that is America is disgusting....

But yeah, he sounds like a real winner. And that was before he wandered off and was captured.

Heya CPW. :2wave: Do they know he told his CO.....what equipment would be considered important to not let fall into the hands of the enemy. His CO told him the Night Vision goggles and his weapon. So he left them.....took a knife, canteen, camera, and diary. Headed off thinking he could make it over the mountains to Pakistan. He failed!

Did you hear Susan Rice yesterday on this issue. This woman is Joke and embarrassment to all Americans.....and BO keeps her incompetent and failed ass Right up in the Peoples face. On Purpose!

I also question the timing of all of this.....as BO and his Team are the Laughing stock of the International Community. Being treated like Patsies......made for the taking.

Never negotiate with terrorists.

It legitimizes them AND gives them incentive for more terror/kidnapping's.

Not 5 for 1. The Taliban got back five dedicated high ranking warriors bent on the destruction of America. We got back one soldier that is suspected of desertion and possibly was never a threat of any proportion to our enemies. Judging from the verbals from his parents he was raised a weak kneed sissy. His mother sounds like she is one step from the Senile House of Panflakes. I have an issue with Obama walking to the podium with his arm around her waist as if she was his old lady. What is that about? This is a bad deal all around and totally indefensible by a president that may go down as the worst president in history. The Taliban is rightfully celebrating a huge victory over America.

Strawman. I have been. I lean libertarian just like you. Bring our soldiers home from everywhere in the world where they arent fighting a direct threat to the states. But that has nothing to do with a policy of releasing enemies to terrorist groups.

I have to agree with some of the posters on Gateway Pundit you posted....This guy does sound like at the very least a Taliban sympathizer, and should be looked at if he compromised any sensitive information about his unit to the Taliban he left his post in search of to join....

I also agree that his father sounds a little batty as well...

His mom is kind of good looking at least in one pic I've seen.

I'd have to hear her thoughts....If she follows suit with her Taliban supporting husband, and possibly son, then I have no thoughts on what she looks like because that would make her ugly to me.

Haha, I wasn't commenting her thoughts, no doubt she supports hubby.

A Taliban sympathizer? Holy Cow, what a dangerous guy.

I wonder if Colin Powell was a Taliban sympathizer when he hand carried a check to the Taliban, from the US government, for $40 some odd million, back in April 2001?

Morning HD...Why bring a strawman into the discussion? I said nothing about him being dangerous I don't think...So, using your line of logic, you think this was a good trade?
