I love Maya Angelou's books, both the autobiographies and the poetry. She was truly a gifted writer. I'm sure going to miss her.

Not sure it's in the entry, but Angelou was, among her many occupations, San Francisco's first black female streetcar conductor.

From Wiki:

She became a poet and writer after a series of occupations as a young adult, including fry cook, prostitute, nightclub dancer and performer, cast member of the opera Porgy and Bess, coordinator for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and journalist in Egypt and Ghana during the days of decolonization. She was an actor, writer, director, and producer of plays, movies, and public television programs. From 1982, she taught at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where she held the first lifetime Reynolds Professorship of American Studies. Her death was confirmed by her longtime literary agent, Helen Brann. No immediate cause of death had been determined, but Ms. Brann said Ms. Angelou had been in frail health for some time and had had heart problems.

Thank you for posting this, I didn't see the news of this.

Maya Angelou was a great human being who brought joy to many peoples lives after a good bit of pain and struggle in her own early life.

I could say a lot more but I'll just say RIP and leave it at that.

I'm just going to guess that some people on this forum will say some bad things about this lady who can no longer speak for herself, but that's their problem and they'll have to live with it.

I totally agree.

Sometimes people see only the bad and miss all of the good.

I read the Wikipedia entry on Maya Angelou and what stood out to me were all of the great things that this fine lady did in her life.

If you'd read the Wiki entry and all that had stood out to you was that Angelou had once been a prostitute, I think this would be much more a reflection on you than it would be on her. ;)
