A U.S. Marine who has been held in a Mexican jail for two months after mistakenly crossing the border with guns could have been spared his continuing ordeal with a simple phone call - and the kind of courtesy American border officials extend to wayward Mexicans, including members of the military.Andrew Tahmooressi, 25, was trying to visit a friend near the border in San Ysidro March 31 when he missed the last exit on Interstate 5 and inadvertently crossed into Mexico. While his mistake was apparently due in part to a poorly marked - and recently changed - sign marking the last chance to make a U-turn back toward the U.S., some reasonable discretion by border officials could have spared him nearly two months in a Mexican prison, sources told Fox News.
"This should have been a phone call," said a border patrol supervisor who used to work the San Diego sector. "I would call my counterpart on the south side, call in a favor and Sgt. Tahmooressi would have been back in a few hours. Why that didn't happen here, I don't know. There's no reason Mexico City and Washington should be involved in something like this."

So, tell me again why we should be cooperating with Mexico in letting their border crossing violators go free? See what happens when an American crosses the Mexican border? They throw him in Max security prison....

Let's trade 20 million illegals for our guy.

Or better yet, just threaten to send the illegals back to Mexico. He'd be released immediately.

But it is striking isn't it? I mean all we hear from Mexico, and their various smiling spokes people is how we need to be more compassionate toward their poor citizens just looking to feed their offspring in Mexico, and how not really a big deal it is for them to come on over....Yet when one American makes a mistake, well it's straight off to Max security prison for him....

Simple do not use the services that employ latinos, 95% chance they are here illegally.
If you are having work done on your house demand that no latinos work on your property. Do not eat mexican food unless you cook it yourself, mexican food is like the simplest food one can make.
Once enough americans vote with there dollars things will change.
Happens all the time i have heard of stories of truckers making the wrong turn ending up at a border crossing with no way to turn around ending up in prison.
Do you see the democrates doing anything about it? hell no.

where is accountability
did the fellow violate mexican law?
don't do the crime if you can't do the time

Can you prove intent? Ever hear of due process?

The first thought that comes to mind, when I think of Mexican law enforcement: corrupt.

So, it's against Mexican law to get lost, and cross the border eh....hmmmmm....So, you advocate throwing those Mexican's that intentionally cross into America into prison?

it's against mexican law to possess a weapon that you are not lawfully carrying
what happened to being responsible for one's own actions

Keeping guns out of the hands of the poor is paramount to Mexicos owners.

Can you prove intent?
yes, prove he had no intention of violating mexican law

Ever hear of due process?
the whining was that the mexican officials made no phone call. that is all it would have taken. then prove that the incarcerated individual was denied access to communication

i have had to arrange bribes to effect release of an American citizen from the corrupt mexican authorities. i did it with the substantial assistance of members of the state department. via phone calls. why did this fellow not seek the assistance of our state department staff ... and being in the service, why did he not seek the help of his employer to resolve what was claimed to be an accident. was it? show us why that should be accepted as true

I wonder what would happen if a Mexican citizen crossed into the US with a firearm...Would he be waved into the US by the BP?

To be clear nothing would have happend if He had crossed into Mexico without a firearm.

From what I understand, all three weapons in the car were legally owned, and being transported legally. So, now that you have falsely claimed that he was unlawfully carrying weapons, you need to back up that bit of BS.

"Sgt. Andrew Tahmooressi was arrested by the Mexican military on March 31 after border inspectors found three legally purchased and registered firearms in his truck."

well, like him, all you have to do is show us the documents for each weapon proving they were legal and registered in mexico

"After mistakenly crossing the border with guns...."

shows contempt for local laws.....

If he'd done that here I'd want him in jail for a long, long time. Americans love guns, expect to be able to take them anywhere even a foreign country...

well, no.

You respect local laws and customs especially when it comes to things that kill people in a country already at war.....

The lack of co-operation i see here is the other side of the Rio Grande

Are you kidding?

"Individuals in Mexican military uniforms drew their guns on a U.S. border agent earlier this year after having crossed the southwestern border into Arizona, a U.S. senator claimed, raising concerns once again that Mexican officials are illegally crossing into the U.S. and, worse, potentially aiding the drug cartels.

The incident described by Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., would appear to be one of dozens over the past decade where Mexican military and law enforcement officers have crossed into U.S. territory. Most are presumed to be accidental, but they also raise the possibility that Mexican military members -- or individuals posing as them -- are helping drug cartels. "

Cartel connection? Senator presses agency on 'Mexican military' incursion into US | Fox News

Yeah, so the answer is NO, we don't toss them into prison.

IMO, if Mexico wants to insist about his unlawfully bringing firearms across the border, which appears to have been accidental, it should confiscate the firearms and expel the U.S. Marine.

No, it's illegal to cross the border into Mexico with a bunch of weapons in your car.

Are you saying people who cross the border illegally should just be released?

I'm not familiar enough with the border, but how the heck do you accidentally enter another country? Was he off-road?

Legally owned and registered. He crossed by accident...

Are you kidding here? Your side of the immigration argument consistently argues for exactly that.

"Once on the freeway heading toward Mexico, cars are funneled into lanes separated by concrete dividers. The only U-turn back to the U.S, before crossing into Mexico, is in the far left lane. Tahmooressi was in the far right lane – blocked from the left by divided lanes."

A phone call to their US counterparts would have solved the entire thing...Are you telling me that they don't have phones in Mexico? We, on this side of the border constantly have Mexican police, and military crossing our border, some by accident, some intentional protecting drug cartels...Those by accident we send home....

But I am sure you still want amnesty for illegals here don't you?

Whatever happened to innocent until proven guilty? Its not the Mexican way? Why not? Its what they want us to do, right?
How are we to assume that those who sneak across our border don't mean us harm?
Time to man up and return the favor would go along way in this debacle.

It would have, wouldn't it? And he isn't the first person to have missed that sign, had no way to turn around, and been imprisoned for months either.
