Ex-CNN employee claims boss fired him for being gay, called him

A former CNN employee claims he was fired because he’s gay and wore bright colors and mariachi outfits to work that were deemed “too flamboyant,” according to a $60 million discrimination lawsuit.

William Kane, who started working at CNN in 2002, claims nobody at the news network ever informed him of a dress code or complained about the hot pink designer shirt he wore in his employee ID photo. Nor did he get any guff for the bright red track jacket, neon green soccer jersey or yellow track suit, with matching shoes and hat, that he wore at other times.

“It really saddens me,” the 33-year-old Kane said of losing his job as a microphone tech. “I feel like the Rosa Parks of CNN. Maybe someone else won’t have to suffer the way I have,” he told the Daily News from inside his Jackson Heights, Queens, home, as he showed off his collection of 11 custom-made mariachi suits — including the one he wore at his wedding — and 100 eye-wateringly bright track suits.

Gay people are funny. A yellow mariachi suit? LOLOLOLOLOL

And a bit of advice, black Americans are tired of you comparing your "struggles" to theirs. It's absurd.

Rosa Parks? Really?

I will admit I'd wear a yellow mariachi suit for $60 million. Probably not $50 million though. I have standards.

Obviously he never watched "Sixteen Candles" and learned from Long Duck Dong that this type of outfit isn't stylish.

The Rosa Parks comparison is a bit much.

I wonder if CNN will cover this story?

Re: Ex-CNN employee claims boss fired him for being gay, called him ‘flamboyant’ in $

Does he think $60 million will be enough?

Re: Ex-CNN employee claims boss fired him for being gay, called him ‘flamboyant’ in $

It is fantastic that he is gay and comfortable with it. I am just not sure that a mariachi suit is the right attire for work. Unless of course you are a mariachi, then it is probably cool. I am a big fan of star wars. I would not expect my company to be happy if came in wearing a boba fett costume or star fleet uniform. I would love to hear tron guys opinion on this.

He can't be gay, most gays I know have incredible fashion sense and would grill this guy.

He was fired over inappropriate dress code, to equate dressing like an idiot to being gay is insulting and he's just using it as an excuse.

Re: Ex-CNN employee claims boss fired him for being gay, called him ‘flamboyant’ in $

Clearly not enough for the Rosa Parks of CNN.

I hadn't considered that. I do have to wonder what Rosa Parks' reaction would have been if he tried to sit next to her on the bus.

Re: Ex-CNN employee claims boss fired him for being gay, called him ‘flamboyant’ in $

Since when does "being gay" require wearing outlandish costumes to work? I was not aware that Rosa Parks could have simply dressed differently to be allowed to sit where she pleased on the bus. This moron should be able to realize that dressing "gay" at work is not a protected right.

Re: Ex-CNN employee claims boss fired him for being gay, called him ‘flamboyant’ in $

That can buy an awful lot of custom made mariachi suits and neon track suits.

Is a mariachi suit a common article of clothing worn by gays, or just among non-Mexicans?

Sounds like she would need Ray Bans.

I thought mariachi suits were a common article of clothing for mariachis.

Re: Ex-CNN employee claims boss fired him for being gay, called him ‘flamboyant’ in $

I thought mariachi suits were a common article of clothing for mariachis.

I did have to look that up and came up with this:

"The word "mariachi" was thought to have derived from the French word mariage ('marriage'), dating from the French Intervention in Mexico in the 1860's, related to the music’s appearance at weddings. "

Now that is ironic.

This is how he dressed for work.

What he said.... being gay isn't a license to be an idiot. I can't help but think CNN is like 99.9999999% of major corporation with a dress code. I do believe any female who dressed like Charo everyday would still be working there... maybe in a small apartment downtown where the equiv of an executive key opens THAT door....

But not in the cube farm... :peace

As a black gay person, I will say that I don't like it when the LGBT struggle is compared to the black struggle. When you generalize both, yes, there are some similarities, however overall there are major differences. Mainly being that LGBT while being screwed over in the US, yes, but it doesn't compare to the terrorism that black people had to deal on a regular basis from both state and nonstate actors.

Did you even read the article you posted? Then you might know he did not actually wear the yellow mariachi outfit to the office.

100% agreed. I've said the same thing myself, however, and had my head handed to me for it.

Hi AW, where did Erod say he wore it to the office?

He mentioned it twice in his op, I wondered why he was bringing that particular item up twice when it wasn't really relevant considering he did not actually wear it to work but the implication he made was that the guy is getting paid for wearing a yellow mariachi suit.

I didn't see that at all. He mentioned the mariachi suit by copying the words straight from the article he linked.

Then when he was posting his own words, it seems he was poking fun at mariachi suits.

I didn't see him say or imply this guy wore the suit to work.

Mr. Kane actually defeats his own case since he said "he got no guff" for all of the bright, flamboyant clothing he lists that CNN let him wear.

The man should instruct his lawyer to settle with CNN for $5,000 so he can go out and invest in some work appropriate clothing and get his ass another job.

Re: Ex-CNN employee claims boss fired him for being gay, called him ‘flamboyant’ in $

CNN was in the wrong here.

They probably never should have hired the little bastard in the first place.
