Obama Establishes National Monument in New Mexico

House Speaker John Boehner (R., Ohio), though, faulted the president's "unilateral action," saying the latest national monument designation would undermine security by limiting law enforcement access to high crime areas near the U.S.-Mexico border.

"Once again, the president has chosen to bypass the legislative branch--and, in this case, do so in a manner that adds yet another challenge in our ongoing efforts to secure our Southern border," Mr. Boehner said. "At a time of continued cartel violence in Mexico, we should not be putting any additional restraints on efforts to protect our borders."

The Obama administration should have included protections to ensure the U.S. Border Patrol and other agencies have adequate access the southwest border, Mr. Boehner said. Such legislation was introduced in Congress but never passed into law.

The national monument was the 11th established by Mr. Obama.
Another land grab. THis represents about 2% of all land in New Mexico. He does this under an act passed in 1906 by Teddy Roosevelt, even though no such power exists in the constitution to do so. I dont know what the legal status of the land was before this. I assume the federal govt would argue that it owns all of southwest due to the Mexican War, and states just rent it. So it can decide how all of it will be used.

Having essentially stolen it from Mexico, its questionable.

The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo disagrees with your off topic remark.

i'm not sure how designating this land a " national momentum" has the effect of restraining efforts on border protection....

Sorry for it to be off topic, but kicking Mexico's ass over trumped up charges on the Rio Grande and forcing a treaty which forgave 15 million dollars of debt to citizens wasn't exactly a real estate transaction in the legal sense of things. But yes, to agree with j5, it seems a land grab, but not unlike such land grabs by previous administrations.

In reality once you paid off your mortgage and supposedly own your own house, you really don't. You are just renting it from the government, don't pay the taxes for a couple of years and see who comes and gets your house. So the government basically owns everything, we just rend everything.
This Reform Party member thinks it is high past time that we start electing Americans to congress and the presidency who put America first and their political party further down the line. But for way too long we have been electing Republicans and Democrats who happen to be Americans instead of Americans who happen to be Republicans and Democrats.

Too true, albeit that it would be a very local government seizure.

I didnt make that argument. However, the states have argued that point. They would know better than me.

    Greetings, Pero.

The deck is definitely stacked against us! If you stop making house payments to the bank, they'll take it. Okay, I understand that because they have lent you the money to buy the house, and they expect to get their loan money back. However, if you finally pay your mortgage off, but don't pay your property taxes, the county government can take it, even though they haven't lent you a dime? Kudos to whatever attorney thought up that scam! If they were to be kind enough to provide the personnel to keep your lawn mowed, and your house painted, and your windows washed, so you didn't have to do it, I guess they might have a valid claim, but as it is, the system is great for everyone except the hapless homeowner! *I understand that the county needs revenue to operate, "for the greater good," so my comment was made tongue-in-cheek!* It still doesn't explain how they feel they own your house, though.

Howdy Pol! Yeah, I seem to think it was Jefferson that fancied life liberty and the ownership of property which would have precluded a property tax. Along the way it was hijacked and now we have the right to pursue happiness instead, lol.
