I haven't kept up with computers like I used to, but I still know more than most. I don't like the way they started changing how advanced access works starting with Vista.
    Exactly.

Perhaps China could change Microsoft's mind and would re-support XP again.

The way there are subroutines like spiderwebs in their OS, I can't imaging a complete rewrite being done my Microsoft. The end result I've seen over the years is the code is rarely optimized anymore, they rely on the speed of the CPU, and most people don't notice.
If you knew about computers, you'd know that it's not "most likely" and that while complete re-writes are rarely done, consecutive partial re-writes lead to old code being eventually discarded for code that is most definitely optimized for the chips the OS runs on.

That may be the most sensible thing anyone says in this thread

There is no truth or logic one can present which will make Windows 8 a good product. It's crap. Everyone knows it is crap. I deal with it on a regular basis. It's awful. And when Microsoft tells you they will no longer support your product unless you run an update you cannot run, then there can be no disputing the awful quality of the OS.

But I will address two things you said:

    1. Problems getting patches.

I've had no problems getting patches or upgrades to my Win8x OS. I simply read and follow instructions...run the procedure...and BANG!...it's done. Easy, painfree and it works. I'm thinking these "pages and pages of forum complaints" are from a combination of diehard Winh8ters, Apple fanboys jumping on the Winh8t bandwagon and idiots who should probably spend their money on Apple products so they don't have to think about what they are doing.

Or it's people who try to update their software and don't see it in the Store and don't know how to restart the wuauserv service. Or they do see it in the store and one driver is incompatible with 8.1 and the upgrade process goes through the entire download and install, only to say "Sorry, we can't install" without providing any reason why before restoring to Windows 8. Your logic here is asinine. There are sometimes hundreds of pages on Microsoft's forum dedicated to problem updates. Microsoft has numerous "help" articles to provide insight into why the update isn't working. These are not Microsoft haters, these are people who are simply trying to update a system which doesn't update.

I don't know if you're a paid shill or you simply don't understand what a good operating system looks like, but you clearly are not qualified to speak on the quality of Windows 8, especially if you're going to dismiss hundreds of complaints based on your personal anecdotal evidence.

    2. In 10 years it won't be Win8.

That is true. And in 10 years, it won't be Win9, either. But whatever the latest OS is then, it will be the direct descendant of Win8. It'll have remnants of Win7, Win8, Win9...and newer features and capabilities that those others don't have right now.
I think you have forgotten what you said. You said that in 10 years, more people will be using Win 8 than Win 7. I'm telling you that is false, just like it would be false to say more people are using Vista than XP.

And I'm speaking from my experiences with Windows 8, as well as the experiences many many people have had with Windows 8, as evidenced by the plethora of complaints around the Internet of things which don't work well or at all.

You can find a plethora of complaints about just about anything on the internet. If we are using complaints online as the bases for whether or not something is good then I suppose everything is crap.

Seems to me people complain about any and all Microsoft products, repeat something they heard, and try to sound like some sort of an expert. Then, you actually use the product, and I think, what are these people talking about? I swear, if I had a tenth of the problems that people say exist with these products, I'd get nothing done at all.

Here's a tip for all the readers here: When someone says "Everyone knows blah, blah, blah." it is a certainty that the person saying that doesn't know a damned thing.

Or it's people who try to update their software and don't see it in the Store and don't know how to restart the wuauserv service. As I said...read...follow instructions...it just works. These people you are talking about sound like they belong in that third category that I spoke of. Apple wants their money. They should give it to them.

I don't know if you're a paid shill or you simply don't understand what a good operating system looks like, but you clearly are not qualified to speak on the quality of Windows 8, especially if you're going to dismiss hundreds of complaints based on your personal anecdotal evidence.
LOL!! The last refuge of one who has nothing: Accuse the other of being a paid shill. Sounds to me like I have more on the ball than those "hundreds" of complainers. I don't seem to have the problems they have and I'm using the same OS they are having trouble with. I'm thinking the trouble with Win8 originates between those people's ears.

I think you have forgotten what you said. You said that in 10 years, more people will be using Win 8 than Win 7. I'm telling you that is false, just like it would be false to say more people are using Vista than XP.
I know exactly what I've said and I stand by my prediction...and my correction. Especially since Win7 will reach it's end of life within that 10 years. Or do you think it's going to last forever? Like those who are using XP? LOL!!

Unwise. Microsoft has dropped support for XP, so future security exploits aren't going to get patched. If you continue to use XP, I'd advise against doing anything sensitive on the machine.

I draw engineered plans and play video games. Shouldn't be an issue.
