Pentagon pushes Manning transfer for gender treatment

Now that's an interesting argument. I had not thought about it like that. But let's assume that it is indeed true that she did not examine the material before releasing it, I still think that the underlying motivation was a revulsion at the atrocities that were being committed with taxpayer money and a desire to stop it. As such, I don't consider her a traitor.

Do you have a reference that states that she did not examine the material?
Then he should have used one of the multiple resources available to whistle blowers in the military. If he was just trying to right some wrong than why didn't he just release the info pertaining to those supposed atrocities instead of tons of files that had nothing to do with anything in Iraq. Why did he wait till he had already gotten in trouble from his chain of command for poor behavior.
Those actions don't sound to me like someone trying to correct a wrong. It sounds like someone trying to get back at the Army and he never thought he would get caught. He is a coward and a traitor.

I can understand why someone would not trust the mechanisms in the military for whistle blowers. That's like trusting a fox to guard the hen house. However, I do think that there is merit to the position that she should have examined the files to be released first. Even taking that into consideration, I still think her motivation was more to make people aware of exactly the type of things that were going on and to correct them, and not so much revenge and an intent to destroy the military. I mean if she really wanted to do that, she could have sold the material to a government like Russia and probably gotten some money and asylum. Now that's my opinion at this particular time.

From everything that I haves seen released there was nothing in there that a country like Russia would want. Most of the stuff was simply embarrassing to the US not national security or advanced weapons related.

I am honestly curious why it is that you feel he was trying to right some wrong especially as he had no idea what he was passing along to wiki and he didn't do it till after he was in trouble.

I think she was stupid, I don't think she is a traitor and glad to read (in the article) she'd be eligible for parole in 7 years. I agree with jail time, disagree with it being 35 years of jail time.

Anyways more to the thread, it sounded more like hormone treatment and not surgery. I'm going to make a broad assumption people think "treatment" is lopping off a couple parts and adding a couple. Saying that I don't know that I agree she should be having hormone treatment for free while in prison, therapy seems fair but not a fan of the treatment (I think HRT is the short hand?).

I don't think there's even any proof she did it outside of the testimony of that criminal hacker.

I think she had some idea because she had seen some of the stuff and was horrified at what was happening. She may not have examined everything she downloaded, but I think she was aware of some of the things. That's my recollection from the top of my head. I think some of the things were of interest to Russia. Also, we don't know everything that was actually downloaded. But honestly, I can't say I know for a fact Russia would have bought what was contained in the files, nor do I know what would be involved in finding someone to sell it to.

I dont think thats an official function of jail. But if it happens anyway, I dont think he will mind. He will probably make someone a fine wife.

My understanding is that people don't like being raped and sodomized.

My understanding is most people dont wish to change sex, and that most people dont like to steal and release state secrets.

So perhaps he might buck the trend in your assertion as well. Can't say I care though.

She should try to make it though prison time as a man, and then have her transformation and treatments after, I think. If she can manage prison time for 35 years, she could just purchase women's clothing and shoes, makeup, breast prosthesis at her own expense. I've seen quite a few males that were passable as females.

None of which will make "he" a "she".

She should not have gotten such a harsh sentence in the first place.

Actually I think her name is Chelsea Manning now.

He can change his name...he cannot change his gender. It's nothing more the cosmetic surgery with hormone treatment added.

Stop playing thick. No, Im saying that I wont lose any sleep about this transgender freak traitor being raped and sodomized in prison.

I don't wish that on anyone as punishment.

First of all she didn't betray her country. She did her country a service. Next of all it's inhumane to deny people psychological treatment that they need just because they are prisoners. Having said that, I think it's fair to debate what level of treatment is needed in this instance.

He (not she) very much betrayed his country.

The concept of man and woman is a product of the ego and is a mental construct. I think that it's a valid topic of debate as to whether sexual reassignment surgery is moral, but I think, in practical terms, it's clear gender notions are based on mental constructs.

There is no such thing as sexual re-assignment surgery....its nothing but cosmetic surgery and hormone treatments.
