Mitt Romney was the wrong candidate to defeat a vulnerable sitting president. If you think about, good old Mitt basically bought the Republican nomination, also he was the next in line candidate which the Republicans have a habit of nominating. Mitt won the states in the primaries in which he outspent all his opponents by 5-1 and sometimes as high as 10-1. The states where the money was relative even, he lost.

then Romney never overcame the trust factor, that trust factor, changing his lifetime held political beliefs to run for president back in 2008 carried over into 2012. That trust factor lost him the nomination in 2008 and the presidency in 2012. I think the electorate was ready for a change, they just weren't ready for that change to be Romney. It is sort of keeping the devil you know instead of buying into the devil you don't. But that is water under the bridge.

I think 2012 can be summed up by saying Romney received the Republican votes, Obama got the Democratic votes and the independents split 50-50. But the Democratic base is larger than the Republican one and has been so since 1932. Hence Obama won only because his base was larger than Romney's. To win a presidential race, like it or not the Republican nominee must win around 54-55% of the independents.
This Reform Party member thinks it is high past time that we start electing Americans to congress and the presidency who put America first and their political party further down the line. But for way too long we have been electing Republicans and Democrats who happen to be Americans instead of Americans who happen to be Republicans and Democrats.
