then Romney never overcame the trust factor, that trust factor, changing his lifetime held political beliefs to run for president back in 2008 carried over into 2012. That trust factor lost him the nomination in 2008 and the presidency in 2012. I think the electorate was ready for a change, they just weren't ready for that change to be Romney. It is sort of keeping the devil you know instead of buying into the devil you don't. But that is water under the bridge.
I think 2012 can be summed up by saying Romney received the Republican votes, Obama got the Democratic votes and the independents split 50-50. But the Democratic base is larger than the Republican one and has been so since 1932. Hence Obama won only because his base was larger than Romney's. To win a presidential race, like it or not the Republican nominee must win around 54-55% of the independents.
Early voting in Georgia. On the 20th of October this old Goldwater conservative voted against both Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton by casting my vote for Gary Johnson. Neither Trump or Clinton belong within a million miles of the Oval Office.
