Kidnapped Nigerian Girls

I know I saw another thread about this, but it is full of partisan bickering. I was hoping to start a thread that is about the Nigerian girls and the things that are being done to rescue them.

I think it's just terrible what happened here, and SOME of the girls are missing from the video. I wonder if they're still alive. Also, I can't imagine how frustrated their parents and loved ones must feel right about now. I hear that it's quite a large area where they could be keeping these girls, so the government would naturally have problems pinpointing their location. However, I don't think there is ANY excuse for allowing these types of groups to become SO powerful to begin with, and THAT is the part that really pisses me off!

Scared but alive: Video purports to show abducted Nigerian girls - CNN.com

Some of those girls may have been sold off, raped to death, or out right murdered.

These people aren't "in the midst" of anyone. They're so far off the deep end that Al-Qaeda is calling them out on their insanity.

The same al Qaeda that tolerates the Taliban executing women and little girls?

This is one of the reasons why it's so upsetting. Nobody knows what is happening to these poor girls.

If a "rescue operation" to save those girls is attempted, and the girls are mowed down by the captors in the process, then the country responsible for the "rescue operation" will receive very embarrassing, worldwide scorn, and rightfully so.

I'm going to have to disagree with the, "writing them off, because it's the path of least resistance", strategy.

The problem is when countries let these pimples fester. It's going to be very hard to do anything about it at this point.

I really think that most of the time these countries' leaders pretty much ignore it, and are paid off to ignore it. They don't care about their people, and the people have no rights to do anything about it. Sad.

Mrs. Obama has been most vocal about this issue, and with good cause.

I wonder if she feels just as badly about the many youngsters killed by her husband's drone actions around the world?

If she feels as badly, I wonder why she is silent about that?

+1

I agree COMPLETELY.

Right. What's worse? At least trying to rescue them, or just letting the captives have their way. I wonder if they will deal with them and end up releasing prisoners for an exchange?

I think we should deploy hunter/killer teams to find these bastards and kill them off a few at a time.

Why does America have to do everything? Our boys have been suffering for decades fighting these wars why doesn't "our best friend Israel" do something for a change? Or how about some other country? Anyone but America again. Our boys have paid their dues and need a break!

Surely Israel can defeat a pack of Nigerian Thugs.

Does anyone know what to do about it now? I mean, when a country allows it to escalate to this level??? We all know some of these governments are corrupt as hell, and I don't believe they care one bit about these girls. I think the only reason why they are even pursuing this matter is because of the international attention it's received, so yes, the fact that the first lady is throwing her support behind the girls and their families is a good thing and could have some good outcomes.

I doubt that the first lady showing she cares about "our girls" is going to have much effect on Boko Haram or the Nigerian government but this useless gesture may make her feel good about herself. She has no idea who these girls or their families really are, and was silent when previous attacks occurred. Nigerian Militant Makes a Name for Himself Through Terror - WSJ.com

Perhaps it's time Muslims kept each other in line. These ongoing incidents happening around the world are liable to give them a bad name.

 myself, I would release the prisoners.

After I had fitted them with RFID chips in their sleep.

:)

Real World, however, the Nigerian government is atrociously incapable to the task of handling Boko Haram, much less getting these girls back. They will probably attempt some kind of deal, which will be partially effective, and set the precedent that the Nigerian State is willing to fund it's own opposition, thereby putting more future children at risk. Unless BH decides to get amazingly stupid (which isn't implausible) and starts targeting U.S. and French infrastructure, we aren't likely to dedicate the CT assets necessary to clean house, and Nigeria is unlikely to accept too much of our help - memory of imperialism has left a prickly response to Western militaries, there.

But Goodluck has an election next year. So he needs to look like he's achieved some kind of success. So he will try for one. Will he be competent to the task of achieving it? .....

As much as it sucks to say, those girls are de facto at the mercy of a bunch of psychotic, angry, uber-violent nihilists. :(

I agree with both of you, and I'm torn on this issue. I would like us to go in their and just kick arses, but at the same time I feel like, why should we make ALL the sacrifices ALL the time, and then God forbid should something go wrong, and then we make more enemies.

Israel lacks the projection capacity, lacks the support infrastructure, and is currently facing a fairly massive threat to it's north. I think precisely 8 of "our boys" have been deployed thus far? Heck, I'd go. This would be a great mission to be attached to.

Israel isn't the cowboy of the world. We are. We are the ones who, for some reason or another, seem to think it is our responsibility to save humanity from itself. I don't expect Israel, or anyone else for that matter, to do it.

Well I have to disagree. I think that pressure on these governments might do some good. It is a motivation for them to do SOMETHING instead of nothing at least.

You mean like an SF team?

Well, to be fair, it's not our fault. Some idiot wrote into our founding documents that all men are created equal with certain inalienable rights or some kind of nuttery like that, and we've periodically felt obliged to back that up ever since.

There are worse Islamic terrorist groups all over the world. Recall that these guys didn't even make Hillary's list.

Worse described.... how? Qualitatively? Quantitatively? Using what metric?

Recall that these guys didn't even make Hillary's list.

....yeah... not sure that's an argument against their designation so much as it is against the State Department....

You mean like an SF team?

I guarantee you there is a few wild-eyed guinea gunmen, that aren't all that bright, holding AK's on those girls at all times with orders to kill when our boys arrive.

We cannot snipe 'em all.
