Rams select Michael Sam, NFL's first openly gay player [W:282]

Re: http://www.latimes.com/sports/football/nfl/la-sp-michael-sam-nfl-draft-20140511-s

Is it? Most experts were saying before he came out that the chances he would get drafted were very slim. It's entirely likely he was drafted just so the Rams could say they were first in accepting gays.

Actually, before he came out most experts projected he would go someone in the 3-5th rounds.

Re: http://www.latimes.com/sports/football/nfl/la-sp-michael-sam-nfl-draft-20140511-s

The tired of living a lie is also, most likely, apart of it as well. It very much sucks and is quite suffocating living a lie.

except he wasn't living a lie,he had already came out to everyone in his life.... his public coming out was something entirely different.

like you said before, I think he was getting out in front of it.. and I think he was most likely hoping for some good national PR going into the draft.

He said he didn't come out to his father a week before he came out publicly. That is a rather big deal.

Um, no. He was projected as a 3rd-4th round pick. Did you even read about this prior to this thread?

Unlikely. The Rams are clearly shoring up their defense. It's no surprise they picked up Defensive players.

Re: http://www.latimes.com/sports/football/nfl/la-sp-michael-sam-nfl-draft-20140511-s

Worst possible team for him to be drafted. Only because he won't play. Their line is Ridonkulous. They are so deep I doubt he will make the team.

NFC West is by far the toughest division in football.

Wilson, Kaepernick and Palmer better lace up their cleats. It's going to be vicious.

When was that? From what I saw the best he could have done was to be drafted in the fifth round. More people than not were saying sixth or seventh round, but plenty were saying he wouldn't be drafted at all.

Re: http://www.latimes.com/sports/football/nfl/la-sp-michael-sam-nfl-draft-20140511-s

What worked? Collins was a professional basketball player before he came out as gay. What are you getting at?[/Q

Professional bench warmer seems he is an ass man all around.

Re: http://www.latimes.com/sports/football/nfl/la-sp-michael-sam-nfl-draft-20140511-s

Yeah, because being the first gay NFL prospect to come out really helped his draft prospects.

If anything, it hurt his prospects.

Obviously it did!

And? Are we supposed to care about a football player that was drafted 300+?

Re: http://www.latimes.com/sports/football/nfl/la-sp-michael-sam-nfl-draft-20140511-s

When was that?

When the season ended. Then his **** Combine dropped him.

Re: http://www.latimes.com/sports/football/nfl/la-sp-michael-sam-nfl-draft-20140511-s

The Rams are monstrous up front. As a fan, I see this as an attention grab and a token of respect instead of a football move. Either way, congrats to all parties.

Re: http://www.latimes.com/sports/football/nfl/la-sp-michael-sam-nfl-draft-20140511-s

I would have drafted him if i was a gm. He was dpoy in the toughest conference. He had a bad combine but so did terrell suggs. I remember by bears passed on him and he ended up being great.

Re: http://www.latimes.com/sports/football/nfl/la-sp-michael-sam-nfl-draft-20140511-s

Rams did have a good draft overall.

Re: http://www.latimes.com/sports/football/nfl/la-sp-michael-sam-nfl-draft-20140511-s

after his performance at the combine, i'm surprised he was drafted at all.

it was nearly unanimous that he's a great dude... but not good enough for the NFL
he's not fast, and he's not strong.... so I guess, here's to hoping he has something in his bag of tricks to overcome those extremely important attributes.

personally, I hope he sucks... but that's just because I can't stand the Rams and I hope they have a losing season.

I'm not a rams fan either but now I'm kinda bound to follow them this year. Not because of Sam but a kid from my high school was signed as a free agent CB/kick returner for them a few weeks ago... thheeeeennnn he got arrested for pot possession.

Fortunately it won't effect his being on the team though.

Re: http://www.latimes.com/sports/football/nfl/la-sp-michael-sam-nfl-draft-20140511-s

I wish him well. I hope he proves the naysayers wrong. But since when is a seventh round pick big news? It doesn't mean that he can't be a great player - Tom Brady was a 6th round pick and Marques Colston was the second to last pick. So I hope he cam be as good as them, and we can talk about how he's a GOOD Linebacker instead of a GAY Linebacker.

Since when is SEC defender of year a 7th round pick? Pretty sure cause he's gay. Should've been more like 5th round pick at least, or taken by a team that needs DLs more. So yeah it is news because most the NFL and especially their fans are too bigoted for a gay player and still stuck in 1950s, and yet Sam had the courage to come out before draft

Re: http://www.latimes.com/sports/football/nfl/la-sp-michael-sam-nfl-draft-20140511-s

It's news, because he's gay and that if he hadn't come out of the closet, he wouldn't have been picked, at all.

LOL yeah right, SEC defender of the year not picked at all. But then here's just another attempt to bash while pretending not to

Or he had that bad of a Combine, which he did.

Re: http://www.latimes.com/sports/football/nfl/la-sp-michael-sam-nfl-draft-20140511-s

Why else would he come out of the closet? Because he figgered he wouldn't get picked, otherwise.

If you actually watched the brief interview with ESPN, he said all the scouts knew already and coming out way before season started hopefully meant it won't be distraction by then.

Re: http://www.latimes.com/sports/football/nfl/la-sp-michael-sam-nfl-draft-20140511-s

It worked for Jason Collins.

Analysis of players with similar stats to Collins revealed 50/50 chance he'd be picked up, and it took a year, so again you're just wrong. Just stop, we can all see your motives.

Re: http://www.latimes.com/sports/football/nfl/la-sp-michael-sam-nfl-draft-20140511-s

which is a smart choice ...and more believable than the " tired of living a lie" argument.

And why is that? If you had the slightest notion how suffocating the closet is, you wouldn't make such assumptions

Re: http://www.latimes.com/sports/football/nfl/la-sp-michael-sam-nfl-draft-20140511-s

it's only news because he's gay... no other reason.

If he's great, he'll be lauded as this great GAY player, if he sucks and gets cut, I'll guarantee you some folks with say it's because he's gay.

Re: http://www.latimes.com/sports/football/nfl/la-sp-michael-sam-nfl-draft-20140511-s

I'm expressing an opinion, just like anyone else.

which we're trashing, as it deserves

take it to limbaugh or political sandbag

Re: http://www.latimes.com/sports/football/nfl/la-sp-michael-sam-nfl-draft-20140511-s

before the combine, he was projected as a 4th round pick... most wrote him off entirely after the combine, he was just that bad.

7th round was a very generous pick

Then there was decent performance at pro day and the combine never solely determines anyone's draft status. 4 years of performance in college does and should have some bearing. Every analysis i read listed him 5th-early 7th round if not for coming out even after combine, so your position that 7th was "very generous" and some kind of favor to the homos is bull****

Re: http://www.latimes.com/sports/football/nfl/la-sp-michael-sam-nfl-draft-20140511-s

That's a rather disgusting thing to say - to suggest that the only reason one is open about their sexuality is to find employment opportunities.

Yeah a tactic that's been used SO often in pro sports no less :lamo
