Michael Sam Becomes First Openly Gay Player Drafted in NFL

May 10, 2014

The St. Louis Rams picked Missouri defensive lineman Michael Sam today, making him the first openly gay player to be drafted in the NFL.Sam came out as gay in February. He told his teammates and coaches before the season."I understand how big this is," he told ESPN's "Outside the Lines" when he decided to come out. "It's a big deal. No one has done this before. And it's kind of a nervous process, but I know what I want to be ... I want to be a football player in the NFL." ]Sam was named an All-American defensive lineman and The Associated Press' SEC Defensive Player of the Year last season.

I wish him well. I hope he proves the naysayers wrong. But since when is a seventh round pick big news? It doesn't mean that he can't be a great player - Tom Brady was a 6th round pick and Marques Colston was the second to last pick. So I hope he cam be as good as them, and we can talk about how he's a GOOD Linebacker instead of a GAY Linebacker.

Re: http://www.latimes.com/sports/football/nfl/la-sp-michael-sam-nfl-draft-20140511-s

after his performance at the combine, i'm surprised he was drafted at all.

it was nearly unanimous that he's a great dude... but not good enough for the NFL
he's not fast, and he's not strong.... so I guess, here's to hoping he has something in his bag of tricks to overcome those extremely important attributes.

personally, I hope he sucks... but that's just because I can't stand the Rams and I hope they have a losing season.

it's only news because he's gay... no other reason.

He could still end up being great. Tom Brady was drafted 16 picks after the Browns drafted Spergeon Wynn. I bet they'd like a do over on that one now!

It does, but he's certainly turned out to be better than most 6th rounders.

Thing with the draft is outside of the top 10 it really doesn't matter when you go, but more what you do once your name is called.

Even within the top 10. Nobody speaks fondly of Ryan Leaf or Tony Mandarich.

my dream waas to be the 3rd string punter on the dallas cowboys... relegated to the practice squad for eternity.
it would have been a good life

pro football bores me nowadays... college ball keeps me interested... unlike the pros, college kids play hard and they try and try...... those spoiled NFL brats barely even pretend to try anymore.

Re: http://www.latimes.com/sports/football/nfl/la-sp-michael-sam-nfl-draft-20140511-s

Tom Brady was snubbed during his college career, only got to play his senior season. He said that only made him WORK that much harder to prove they were all wrong about his talent.
Glad i got to see him play but i will not miss the game.

The players in the big programs are just as pro as anybody. They just don't get to cash in until the NFL calls.

Co-winner defensive player of the year for the SEC
I wonder when the other winner got drafted.

Ahh google is my friend

CJ Mosley 17th pick first round versus 249th

Just an observation, not a criticism.

It's news, because he's gay and that if he hadn't come out of the closet, he wouldn't have been picked, at all.

he might, but I think he's gonna have a very tough time overcoming his glaring weaknesses...

I might be going on a whim here, but I'm going to say that felons in sports is not a new thing.

Hell, I went to school with Russ Springer. I would have given my right nut to a pro baseball player at his level.

How do you know that? He was a good enough player to take a late round chance on.

I don't think his coming out affected his stock all that much. If anything he hurt it as teams don't want a 7th rounder to be a huge distraction. He was a projected 3rd rounder at the end of the season and his stock certainly tumbled with his poor combined, but I don't think it would've kicked him all the way out if he hadn't come out.

Definitely. Especially on the Rams where he's not going to get to play much with their D-line.

Why else would he come out of the closet? Because he figgered he wouldn't get picked, otherwise.

Mosley is a bit undersized, but he got athletics going for him.... strong and fast
I think that dude is gonna be a force at ILB within a few years... athletics and instincts, he got em in spades.
