Scientists Create First Living Organism With 'Artificial' DNA

For billions of years, the history of life has been written with just four letters — A, T, C and G, the labels given to the DNA subunits contained in all organisms. That alphabet has just grown longer, researchers announce, with the creation of a living cell that has two 'foreign' DNA building blocks in its genome.

Hailed as a breakthrough by other scientists, the work is a step towards the synthesis of cells able to churn out drugs and other useful molecules. It also raises the possibility that cells could one day be engineered without any of the four DNA bases used by all organisms on Earth.

The fun begins...

Excellent, nothing gets me more excited than innovation and invention. There is nothing else in the world that showcases the raw might that is humanity. Humanity may now be like God soon, who knows? Be it 10000 years or 1000, it is my hope for us to become omnipotent.

This sort of **** should be discouraged.

Why? It's fascinating and could have potential benefits when it comes to creating biologics and research.

Well, I think if we don't wipe ourselves out that via technology, humans will be as close to immortality as possible. And think of it. It was done by humans...just humans. I love it!

Close to immortality?

**** that

Let's strive for absolute biological immortality!!!! FOR HUMANITY! I don't care if there may be other life forms in this universe. All I care is that we show them our superiority, and that they bow to us, the strongest species of the universe.

OKAY! You talked me into it. Lets go for the big show! :2party:

Cure cancer, turn on telomerase. Instant immortality.

Read a book back in the late 60s that explained why not. I believe it was by Desmond Morris but I could be remembering that wrong. What really stuck with me over the years is the truth of it. The author's premise was that we had reached a point where technological change had outpaced our society's ability to cope with (live with). And that this gulf between tech and understanding of that tech would greatly widen in upcoming decades until a fracture point was reached or an extinction level disaster was created by the gulf.

Oh what fools these scientists be...

If these guys could make a nacho that doesn't get soggy in the fridge...then I think we are on to something. Aim high fellas.

Change is dangerous, terrifying, and good.

We dislike it.

Change is inevitable.

Playing around with things you can't possibly hope to fully understand?

Stupid.

Especially if it avoids sogginess by eating all the moldy leftovers you don't feel like cleaning out.

No, it shouldn't. Science is what makes the world better, it actually does positive things.

Oh what fools these scientists be...

Yeah, how dare they try to cure diseases and improve the quality of life of humans.

Beats mumbling prayers that do nothing.

Ever see a faith healer grow back an amputated limb?
