Scientists Create First Living Organism With 'Artificial' DNA

Close to immortality?

**** that

Let's strive for absolute biological immortality!!!! FOR HUMANITY! I don't care if there may be other life forms in this universe. All I care is that we show them our superiority, and that they bow to us, the strongest species of the universe.

Is this a serious response?

It could come with disastrous side effects, used to create new diseases, bioweapons and all sorts of horrible ****.

We can do all that stuff now.

Dude! Living is awesome. Who wouldn't want more of it? If I had reason to believe I could live for a few hundred years or more, I would save every penny I could and live a few hundred years in luxury

ever see that movie time something. they did the same thing the problem is no one died so time became the currency of the day. on your 25th birthday your time started and you were given 2 years.

everything was bought and sold in time. once you ran out of time you died.

Is this a serious response?

Yep, a person prideful in humanity hoping that in case ET forms do exist we do not ever show inferiority. Plus progress and prosperity have only occured when we strive toward a common goal of bettering ourselves, so no matter how one wishes to think of what bettering ourselves is as long as they do it it is fine. For me bettering humanity would be through doing anything to advance it so as to make anything out in the universe inferior.

Maybe for someone else bettering humanity would be through X instead of my Y. So long as humanity doesn't regress (technologically and ethically according to today's standards so far) whatever way they want to view it is fine by me.

Plus, read my signature, you seriously think I would fake something like this?

And you're going to look like death eating crackers.

Do you have to work until you're 650 to get Social Security? And what will the world be like with 125 billion people?

Why would I? The technologies that would conceivably allow me to transcend my current biological limitations (advanced cybernetics, bionics, artificial organs, telomere & gene therapies) would also allow me to remain vigorous and ambulatory. The death of death will be our greatest achievement as a species and I think it will occur within the next two centuries. I only hope that I'm around to benefit.

isn't this how all zombie movies tend to happen? they create this wierd genetic dna that reproduces cells etc ...

Yeah....that's what is going to invent the "Zombie Apocalypse" that so many folks prophesize. Well, the folks on the SiFi Channel and AMC.

MORE BACON!

I want a plant that grows bacon. Then...and only then, I could be a vegetarian.

In point of fact, in the last century or so, we've seen not God, but political leaders bring down mass destruction upon Humanity through the application of knowledge gained through the use of Science, and by presenting various forms of bigotry, pugilism, political constructs and social orders as "scientific." God has been able to take a break from the wrath business.

.

Oh He hasnt totally been on vacation: Spanish Flu, massive tsunamis, regional droughts that starve hundreds of thousands, and assorted other natural disasters...stuff really adds up.

Population control simply at that point. And biological immortality clearly =/= immortality as people think of. Crime will still be a thing, wars will still be a thing, and those people if never replaced would begin to form a massive dent in the human population.

I'm pretty sure you just made his point for him.

hey just saying. messing with that stuff isn't safe it is very dangerous.

I saw that. Dont remember the title. People could trade time with each other too.

I find almost everything about your little slogan disturbing...even the phrasing is disturbing: "rise as a glorious empire," "collectively," "the strongest species the universe has ever seen." The last is so arrogant and implies so much aggression.

But this is my my personal opinion and I was just commenting on the slogan.

hey just saying. messing with that stuff isn't safe it is very dangerous.

What makes you think this is unsafe or dangerous at this point? Do you believe that such a technology will expand unfettered without the creations lawful boundaries of dos and don'ts?

Will there be scientific rogues? Sure. The world will just have to deal with that when they act in ways that are "unhealthy" to humanity. Or other species as far as that's concerned.

Scientific messing has brought this world to where it is today. All's not perfect, but I'd dare say we live a hell of lot better than folks did a mere 100 years ago, which is nothing in the spectrum of time. A 100 years isn't even a spec of time in the big picture.

Read a book back in the late 60s that explained why not. I believe it was by Desmond Morris but I could be remembering that wrong. What really stuck with me over the years is the truth of it. The author's premise was that we had reached a point where technological change had outpaced our society's ability to cope with (live with). And that this gulf between tech and understanding of that tech would greatly widen in upcoming decades until a fracture point was reached or an extinction level disaster was created by the gulf.

That is quite an interesting thesis. I don't entirely agree but this would certainly make a fascinating discussion topic. I suggest you make a thread about it.

Well, I think if we don't wipe ourselves out that via technology, humans will be as close to immortality as possible. And think of it. It was done by humans...just humans. I love it!

I think you're putting the cart before the horse a bit. This is an interesting study, but the scope of practical application is still not fully understood.

Thanks for your opinion. Progress isn't harnessed in fear of what isn't fully understood.

I guess when you don't believe in God or heaven, this is what you have to hope for.

This is a scary thought too as we get into that most terrifying scenario constantly warned about in popular media. At a certain point, humanity's desire to attain status akin to godhood leads to an inexorable decline towards barbarity and fascism as moral values rapidly decline since science and rational empiricism provide no solid moral foundation.

all it takes is one rogue scientist or an organization that could make a gene that destroys half of mankind.

Popular media feed and nurture barbarism and fascism at every turn. It warps morality and stilts humanity to fit an agenda and create power.

People probably said the same thing when a scientist discover using a live disease that killed people to create a live vaccine, which was thought to be outrageous for the time. Yet look at all the lives saved.

yeah you can build immunity to that and not all of those worked out well. we are talking about DNA manipulation there is no immune system for that.
