Pilot killed in air show crash at California Air Force base

I think that after a certain age - say 60 - every pilot that wants to perform aerial aerobatics/air races has to have a thorough examination (at their own expense) before every show/weekend.

You want to perform aerial acrobatics/races in front of a crowd and you are old - great. Just make sure you can prove that you are absolutely fit before each one.

I didn't see it so much as callus, as Monday morning snark.

What better way to go though? I hope my time comes while I'm basking in the sun while tending my garden. Though not a thrill seeking activity, it's doing what I love.

How would you prefer to go?

Well, let's say that you are basking in the sun tending your garden when suddenly you are set upon by a cloud of killer bees. At some point your death stops being about what you love and more about the bees.

I don't think the pilot lasted very long, if at all. The bees thing might take a few minutes. ;)

As it happened, only the pilot was killed. This could have been a major disaster.

A 77-year-old has no business flying upside down 8 feet from the ground on purpose.
Stunt flying is for young pilots.

I don't see where age comes into it.

Died doing something he loved doing. Sounds like a good way to go.

You don't see where age comes into it? Do you know anyone 77 years old?? Their reflexes have gone the way of the dodo bird, their physical strength is worth crap, their judgement may or may not be impaired.

Yes, you're right. He did die doing something he loved. That's a good thing. What I'm grateful for is that he didn't take a grandstand with him.

Airshow accidents are relatively common, but much less common that anyone other than the pilot gets hurt.

So many places for something to go wrong with the old designs:

I know it came off as rather callous, and I guess it was. I just get tired of the "died doing what they love" phrase when a thrill seeker ends up killing themselves.

Thrill seekers don't make it to 77 in that business.

I feel bad for the family and I think that his age was not as much a factor. This is dangerous and so is many things people do. However I just wish we as a country would have more headlines and discussions when someone in the richest country in the world dies of starvation as we do for things like this.
