Obama, Merkel threaten new Russia sanctions

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama and German Chancellor Angela Merkel threatened tougher new sanctions against Russia on Friday if Moscow does not quickly change its disruptive behavior.

I think the speech is great. Calm, in control, civil, smart, and cooperative. Just like what we are trying to build in EU and USA.

I just wish the backward mentality in Russia do not see this as weakness. Why must we change to their level and yell tough, beat chest like Gorilla's, in order to be taken seriously from them?

The only way to be "Taken Seriously" by Putin...would be to engage militarily and start killing innocent people who he sees as rooks on a chessboard. Putin seems to want conflict and expansion...economic warfare is the only option that does not lead to war.

It seems that Putin sees through the "threats" and has experience enough to feel comfortable expanding his military control over neighboring lands. Taking over control of Crimea resulted in moderate chest beating and minor sanctions so Putin has decided that perhaps the entire Ukraine (and beyond?) can be had without any outside military resistance being faced. Upping the economic sanctions from minor to moderate, as Putin claims ever more territory, still allows Putin what he wants just at a slightly higher cost.

Merkel proved her savvy in the "trade" agreement the EU was trying to pull a fast one with and that kicked the Ukrainian fiasco off in the first place. Together the Man that Can and that woman from the East showed their expertise at protecting populations in Syria and in the run up to what seems a beginning civil war in Ukraine. Let's hope that the pair are more successful at reneging out of a deteriorating slide into all out war in Europe. I would not count on it, but maybe they have just been playing dumb and aren't at all.

Mornin' D. Obama's words don't do anything but tell Putin he can go ahead and take the Ukraine. The worse that will happen is sanctions.....which he can and has already reduced some of the impact.

Note the Part where Merkel and Obama state there will be no use of Force to stop Putin.

Now think how Putin looks at that.

Economic warfare also leads to war, only later.

Let's not forget that Merkel's first priority is Germany's well being. She is a level-headed woman from all indications, but being so close geographically must make her feel like she's walking a tightrope. I still don't understand why we are involved in this at all, since this all started because the Crimean people, who are Russian, wanted to re-join Russia, and they voted overwhelmingly to do so. Borders seem to change all the time, whether or not we agree, so I feel we should take a "wait and see" attitude, instead of attempting to decide for other countries what we feel they should do!

    Greetings, JoG.

Well, history tends to show that economic warfare only works when the opposition also sees you are a superior and willing military foe as well. So military strength and a perception of a willingness to use it is a prerequisite for economic warfare.

For instance, Putin will put the screws to the EU through cutting back oil and gas exports because he feels both militarily superior and knows the EU is unlikely to use military force against him.

Economic warfare and isolation would only be at the cost of innocent Russian civilians. They would in turn not blame Putin but us for putting sanctions irrelevant the cause (i.e., delude from hegemony).

Wonder if a good worldwide Hollywood movie may turn the blame to its rightful owner. In a scene Putin would be informed that the population will struggle due to economic difficulties to which Putin would respond in cold blood "I do not care!"
