Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA[W:545]

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

Like the Dixie Chicks

The chicks were shootin the breeze, in the privacy of their home while being recorded without their knowledge?

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

Sterling signed a contract with NBA

Does Spike Jones own an NBA team?

We can go around in circles all you want - fact remains that both Sterling and Lee have racist views that are outside the mainstream and the NBA has chosen to ban Sterling because of those racist views and the NBA has chosen to ignore the racist views of Lee by not banning him. It's hypocritical and gutless on the part of the NBA because it's far easier to slam an old white guy than it is a black celebrity. There's no high moral ground here, no standing on principle - this is simply a public lynching because that's what the screamers want and it's the expeditious thing to do.

Am I the only one who finds it amusingly apropos that this explosive brouhaha pits Sterling against Silver?

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

So if your employee said you, your company, or your product sucked, should and employer be able to do anything about it?
There's somerhing wrong with that idea, too. Free speech is a civil right.

I told Kobie earlier that when I got online this morning, I wanted to get the latest news/opinions etc. on Sterling & the ban handed down by Silver. When I Google to hit the news on something, I always type in minimal but very relevant terms in my search engine. This morning I made the mistake of typing "Sterling Silver". You can only ****ing imagine what I got returned to me in my Google search. :lamo

Yes, but you are misapplying it.

I support the right for the Dixie Chicks to say what they said. Now does that mean their consumers have no choice? What happened to the Dixie Chicks was a decision by music lovers. At this point, it is some high and mighty executive making the decision.

Two words

Clear and Channel

The NBA has chosen to ban Sterling and it can. It can't ban Spike Lee.

And no, it's not about principles; It's about money

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

No. If it was a legal action or something then it should be thrown out of court. But it isn't, every one cannot unknow what they know.

We're talking about something a little different here - in this case, in effect, it is the employee disciplining/firing the boss. And taking it further, it is equal partners in a corporation, each with equal voting shares/stock, voting to require one partner to divest himself of his shares in the corporation potentially at great loss and personal tax implications. I don't think this is the legal slam dunk, pun intended, that many think it is.

In fact, officers of a corporation can force another shareholder to divest themselves of stock

He hurt the product, he is gone, supposedly 29:1. Funny, I would have expected the RWers to be on the other side of this one. Next time an employee gets fired for a statement the boss don't like I hope I can find this thread. Oh yea, I don't know about the legalities about losing the business, I understand that goes to court rather than arbitration. IF that is the case it will be tied up for years and he is 80 something, so I doubt he loses the team.

So, you ARE ok with it! Thats sick!

The sad part, is that you'll regret your attitude one day. Someone you do like will have their life ruined, because of something he said.

The worst part, is the double standard you support.

You have me pegged wrong. I have no problem with the NBA disciplining the man for the impact of his private views, I just think the NBA has overstepped what a court will consider reasonable under the circumstances and I don't believe Sterling is as devoid of merit in challenging this decision in court as many here do.

I would hope most conservatives would value the property rights of all individuals and not support the public square lynching of anyone for a disagreement related to personal views.

As I said previously, the owners of the Orlando Magic have very strong anti-gay views that they've expressed and they've financially supported activist attempts to fight gay rights movements. Last time I checked, being an anti-gay bigot is not more acceptable in the mainstream than being a racist bigot.

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

I probably did sorry. I listened all day to the sports stations today and the NBA is governed on arbitration. I don't even pretend to understand it all but...it is an agreement by the owners to allow an arbitrator to do what is best for the league. If it went to court and the illegal recording was evidence I would of course be for throwing it out. This is not a lynching it is a business decision. He is not at this point losing his business, he just cant go to games etc. That might be different because it goes to court.

Re: NBA Bans Donald Sterling For Life

True, but if he sells, he's going to take a beating

He's not going to get top dollar because right now it's a damaged brand. In addition, the buyers know he's in a tough spot so the can low ball him. Finally, he's going to have to pay taxes on the capital gain. All in all, it's going to cost him tens of millions and maybe even more than 100 million

That sale ain't gonna happen any time soon, this is headed for a lengthy court battle.
