Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA[W:545]

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

Property rights are not enshrined in the constitution. Donald Sterling does not have a right to own an NBA team. He entered into a voluntary arrangement, and he broke the terms of that arrangement.

Don't be so sure Sterling won't win in the end, which could entail numerous possibilities. The longer it drags on, the more it hurts the NBA brand.

Sterling, an attorney, is regarded as one of the most litigious owners in professional sports.

3. Lack of 'morals clause'. Article 13 lists a series of enumerated wrongs, some of which are specific but none of which seem directly relevant to an owner whose racism expressed in a private conversation sparks national outrage. Some owners might argue that if the NBA wanted ouster as a remedy for a situation like this one, the constitution and bylaws' drafters would have included it. Along those lines, there is no "morals clause" in these documents that empowers the ousting an NBA owner. The absence of a morals clause, in contrast to the inclusion of other provisions, could suggest that such a clause was intentionally omitted.

These tax considerations make it more likely that Sterling will fight the NBA to hold onto the Clippers. Even if he ultimately loses a legal battle, the process of losing could take years to play out in court. At the risk of sounding macabre, Sterling may be motivated to wage a protracted legal battle in order to keep the team for as long as he lives.

The NBA is awesome. This is the same NBA who let DeShawn Stevenson play even after pleading "no contest" to having sex with a 14 year old girl, who he got drunk.

ARe you sure it was DeShawn and not LeShawn or KeyShawn or ReShawn or TeShawn instead?

Michael Vick plead guilty and served 21 months in prison, not like he got off easy.

And then he was WELCOMED back into the NFL. What? You think Michael Vick served 21 months in gpop? You think he was dining with killers and thieves? Look man, when celebrities go to jail, they're not there like you and I would be. They're there getting perks that nobody else gets. Alone time in the showers? You got it. Better food? Yep. Commissary tabs? Yep. How do you think he stayed in shape for 21 months? You think he didn't have a personal trainer coming in every week? You think he was there eating portions so small you go to bed hungry? Lol. C'man man. Michael Vick got a slap on the wrist and a multimillion dollar deal when he got out. Donald Sterling is getting ****ed in the ass and all for bull****. He probably feeds more black people on a daily basis than Al Sharpton. But HE'S the guy you REALLY wanna go after?

I cannot believe you are actually defending that racist prick.

I'm defending his right to be racist without being bullied and pushed out of his business. As I said, I would have been fine with a financial penalty. What has happened is an ABSOLUTELY disgusting way to handle this. It has essentially told people: From now on, if enough people plot together, we'll find a way to get rid of you for your opinions. That's bull**** my friend and you as a Libertarian SHOULD know that.

The NBA had to act, because it was fighting an insurgency from its players, coaches and other owners over this guy.

Sterling is getting karma. Bigots talk that way. It is OK to be a bigot, but there are consequences, even more if you are a public figure.

Yep, business decision. The conservatives always whine that businesses don't have the right to make decisions. The NBA made one.

I am not sure that a $2.5 million dollar fine will hurt him quite that much

Net Worth
$1.9 Billion

Donald Sterling - Forbes

He'll have all the money in the world, but will have nobody who wishes to associate with him, except for maybe his wife. Just about everyone and everything he has had is now in tatters. Yeah, the $2.5 mil is like a parking ticket to him, but you know, I'd much rather have friends, than all the money in the world. Just to think people really adored and worshipped this man, such a letdown and disappointment to many.

Friends aren't worth much... I would take the money in a heartbeat.

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

Personally, the most the NBA should have done was condemn the words. I'm sure all the NBA owners are proponents of free market economics (Yes, I AM laughing my ass off saying that) so they would be more than happy to let the market work itself out. New draftees would refuse to sign. No free agents would go there and at the end of all of their contracts those players current would move on. Fans would stop going(This one questionable as most ticket holders are white) but with a losing team they would stop attending. The revenue loss would be such that the guy would be forced to sell.

It isn't like this guy got on the ESPY's and said what he did, he said it in private, are we not allowed our private thoughts and opinions anymore?

You are allowed your thoughts and opinions but you are not free of consequences, I am not sure why people don't understand that.

Yes, money can buy almost everything, except happiness. Sterling might be spending most of it to try to find a hole to crawl into where he won't be seen in public.

Donald Sterling has been a known asshole for three decades, and was generally regarded as the worst owner in American sports. I can't think there's that many people that really adored and worshiped him outside of the fact that he was insanely rich. And anyone with his kind of bank will ALWAYS have people who wish to associate with him.

I think he kinda got a raw deal, although I wouldn't be surprised if that "lifetime ban" is rescinded in a few years. It's the Marge Schott-George Steinbrenner treatment; this is not unprecedented (the only difference being that Steinbrenner broke the law, twice). But the NBA is under new leadership now, and with players threatening to boycott games, enough was enough. The brand is far more valuable than the man, and the man was threatening the brand, regardless of how skeevy the circumstances were that his feelings came to the fore.

Well Kobie, I'd always thought that the wealthy hob nob with the wealthy, probably the only real friend he ever had was the almighty $, I didn't know that he was known as being a jerk.

Yes, the NBA has to protect it's brand, it's about the money, which is much larger than one person.

Money has bought me happiness...

Yes, money bought me happiness a couple of times in my life, one happiness only costed me 20 bucks back in 1973, and the second happiness lasted 7 years, but, she got the mine, and I got the shaft.

Hookers can do that to a man... me? I enjoy my kids and isolation. Nothing is more enjoyable than golf, surfing or reading by myself. My ex-wife taught me that.

He's legendary for it. I posted earlier that the harsh penalty was a lifetime achievement award for being a colossal gaping asshole for decades. If this was his first PR offense, he wouldn't have gotten banned for life.

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

Fairly predictable.

Remind me to never tell off a girlfriend who is literally half my age over a smart phone with a recorder. Wow.

Remember when Isaiah Thomas said if Larry Bird was black, he'd be just another good player? Would that get him banned now, too? Does this apply to players for anything they say, too?

Slippery slope, but here we are.

Bill Clinton and Jesse Jackson said disparaging racial things about President Obama and they weren't fined millions of dollars or banned for life from anything. Snoop Dogg, in his tirade against Donald Sterling, called him 'redneck' and 'white-bred'. Where is the outrage, calls for a boycott, fines and ban for life for his racial comments?

I wasn't aware I had to worry about consequences in the privacy of my own home, not quite sure why people don't understand that.

The tramp needs to be brought up on charges.

Again your attack on woman is simply a deflection. Yes she is not a hero...in fact it might be a crime. (not certain as it appears there were others present) but the bottom line is that you have consequences where ever you are. If you express something for someone else to hear it and they repeat it to others then there will be consequences. Even in your own home. Once you share your point of view, to however small a group, it is out there. She may not have had a legal right to record it, but that is not relevant to the fact that we know what he said. Just because he thought it was private doesn't change that, in fact it makes it worse as it suggests his public persona is a ruse.

There will be none. Too many out there that think like Stuart Scott (SportsCenter anchor), who basically says that minorities by definition can NOT be racist to whites. Only the white man can be racist towards minorities.

edit - "@StuartScott: True Racism is group w majority/economic/political power discriminating against others..
Blacks/Hispanics can be ANGRY/RUDE but not "Racist"

SMH.

And also this gem:

"Cases of a minority not hiring a white person, not engaging with a white person, etc. are by definition not "racis(t/m)". A white dude shouting the "N-word" is racist because it plays in to a greater narrative of suppression of a disadvantaged group."

So don't bother yourself worrying about Barkley or Snoop or LJ or any other black guy, he can discriminate all he wants and even refuse to hire you based on the lack of color in your skin. But don't you dare go aimlessly shouting "the N-word", because THAT my friend is suppressing the disadvantaged.

Are they owners in the NBA if not then who do you think should fine them? You are free to pull your advertising from any of those people, boycott any products they promote and condemn them publicly.

Oh can you tell me what racially disparaging thing Jesse said, I don't know that I have paid much attention to him in 15 years.
