Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA[W:545]

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

If you can show me were merchandise sells and butts in the seats is out weighed by tv revenue...I'll accept your contention.

You're not a big sports fan, are you...

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

Public opinion says he sucks and a very large majority of those involved with the NBA agree. Old right-wing white men are not the most important demographic here.

The liberal obsession with old white men continues.

1750Texan is probably right. If I'm not mistaken, the National Hockey League is the only major professional sports that has teams relying to a large extent on arena gate and merchandise to generate their profit margins. The other leagues rely heavily on television revenue. The NHL recently signed a major TV deal with a Canadian cable giant which will put them in the same boat as the other leagues going forward. TV and the various other means of "airing" the product is what drives profit in major league sports these days.

I read it wrong.

TV revenue is where the bulk of pretty much every sport comes from.

Only if they're rich.

Greetings, CJ. :2wave:

Sad, but apparently true! Nobody cares about old white men that have no money! They go through life ignored by both liberal's and gold-diggers from both parties, bless their hearts!

I'll have to start a support group - I'm sure some good liberal in government will give me a grant to get the thing started, don't you think?

And Good Evening Lady P. - a piss-poor rainy, windy day here today and looks like we have a forecast for rain for the next week or so - those April showers are apparently going to bring May showers!

Such a nice guy too.

No, he is an asshole. but you better start learning to stand up for assholes and their rights if you hope to hold onto your own. What happened to Sterling today was over the top. The next victim may be you.

Sterling's "rights" did not enter into the equation at all. He was punished according to the bylaws that he agreed to when he became an NBA owner. The government didn't sanction Sterling. If it had, then you could start complaining about "rights."

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

Al Davis, the deceased former owner of the Oakland Raiders pretty well proved that legally wrong a couple of times, if I'm not mistaken.

Sports Law legal definition of Sports Law. Sports Law synonyms by the Free Online Law Dictionary.

Al Davis very much did prove the NFL wrong in who owns the Raiders franchise. I don't know if that would apply to the Clippers and Sterling if he chose to push back or not. He would have grounds to push back too, as this wasn't a public statement but a private conversation that was recorded without his knowledge you get that in a courtroom with a jury and good lawyer Sterling could give the NBA merry hell. I am interested to know if he is going to fight back or not. So far its been a one sided pounding. He didn't become a billionaire by being a wimp.

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

His GF being photographed with Magic set the old dude off. There's much more to this story.

BTW: she was also a Dodger's groupie.

I just listened to an interview with Marques Johnson on KJR in Seattle.. He had lots to say about playing for Sterling. And none of it was good.

Those bylaws may not hold up in court because of the situation and how his opinions were brought to the public. That's of course Sterling gets his back up and chooses to fight. He may just take it and his money to the beach.

Smart phones, google glasses, eye implants, Xbox cameras......I suggest we all just shut the **** up for our own good.

I'll bet Mitt Romney would agree with you.

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

Michael Vick killed some ****ing dogs and he was back in the NFL within 4 years. Kyle Lowry basically assaulted somebody and he's still in the NBA. Jason Kidd beat the living **** out of his wife and nothing happened to him. Alen Iverson was allowed to play in the NBA after being convicted of basically beating someone down with a chair. I didn't care about his comments and now that I've heard the punishment, I hope he sues the living **** out of the NBA. I hope he makes a ****load of noise and makes life a living hell for them. There is absolutely NO reason this should have gotten as far as it did. A fine of $100K? Sure.

It's possible that sports leagues learned lessons from those 1980's team movement times and have new provisions within franchise contract language that preclude what happened with the Raiders and other NFL teams. I know that the Buffalo Bills, who are no up for sale, have several provisions in their agreements related to movement of the team so things may have been tightened up. But then, courts will tell you that a contract that has illegal terms is not a contract that can be enforced, so it will be interesting to see if he pursues a court challenge. I'd like to see it, mostly because I like a good fight between the little guy and the powers that be, particularly when the little guy is loaded and able to carry the fight a long way. I do remember with Marg Schott, back in her time as owner of the Cincinnatti Reds, and MLB being unable to force her to sell and they just kept on suspending her one year at a time until she died. I'm not sure how a court will look upon an owner of a business being banned from attending to that business for life - seems to me to be unenforceable.

The reaction to Sterling was clearly just as much a political one as a corporate one. That these hypocrites are allowed to do such damage to an individual over comments resulting in a private conversation is damn scary and I believe does violate his rights.

He is part of a large corporation, he has to live by the rules of that corporation. The NBA saw the risk in having one of its people in a high visibility role, so they did what they had to. Business decision, capitalism. Are you anti business and anti capitalist?

Somehow I think if push comes to shove the ban on him attending games at his facilities and conducting business may not last if he fights back. If he fights back is the real question. I bet right now he is thinking over the pros and cons of doing just, that fighting back.

Michael Vick plead guilty and served 21 months in prison, not like he got off easy.

As I said in a previous comment, billionaires in the 80s aren't really too interested in more money and beaches - they like their toys and for a sports fan there's no bigger toy than your own professional sports team. That's the reason a guy like him has owned the team for 30 some yrs.

It's based upon surveillance law, same reason video voyeurism is a felony in many states. Taping a conversation is considered surveillance so without the appropriate license or a public domain defense expectation of privacy to the second party is considered present.

Unless the NSA does it, of course.

Well, you're wrong.

This is what courts are for and I hope the man takes the NBA to court. I like the odd bet now and then, but I wouldn't put money on the outcome of a court case either way here.
