Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA[W:545]

Re: NBA Bans Donald Sterling For Life

From riches to rags in four days. wow.

The man still has 2 billion dollars. Not really rags.

Hint:when talking about discrimination, racism, bigotry, don't say "this isn't the Special Olympics".

No hint needed. The Special Olympics tagline is "Everyone's a winner". Keep your paranoia in check. It was President Obama who made fun of Special Olympians, not me.

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

To ban him for life and then fine him $2.5 million?

If I was him, I'd give them the finger and no $$.

I'm not supporting him in the least but I like that the sponsors have spoken, rather than the league stepping in. I dont know the legality surrounding sports leagues but I dont like them banning him. If he's the owner of the team, the team should be banned. (Not saying I want that but if the team is his property, then the league shouldnt have it both ways. He only has the right for his team to compete with league approval...I get that. So then he should be able to take his property and go.)

Yeah, I know it's not that simple. I dont wish to see the team members and employees suffer but it seems like hypocrisy....we'll keep your property and you can take a hike.

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

One thing that bothers me is that on my Twitter feed, Phil Robertson recieved a similar punishment for his homophobic remarks and was defended by lots of people I follow, citing that he has "freedom of speech" (even though that simply means politicians can't pass laws restricting speech), yet I haven't seen a single person defend Donald Sterling for his racist remarks. The message I'm getting here is "Hey, racists are really bad and don't deserve equal protection under the law, but we must do whatever we can to protect homophobes." (Even though, once again, freedom of speech is not infringed in either situation)

While I currently don't have an opinion on Sterling's firing or Robertson's short-lived suspension, I do have an issue with the difference between the public reactions of both events. Why do homophobes deserve protection, but not racists?

Amazing to see how many people here are so anti business. A business makes a decsion because of bad PR and everyone is whining? NBA made a bottom line decision for the betterment of their company. Free market spoke, advertisers left, fans and employees got angry, the company did something to nip it in the bud.

The irony.

I guaran-fing-tee you if he said "I don't want you bringing Catholics into my games" I would express the same outrage.

I wouldn't want Catholics at my games. They'd run around taking up a collection.

Well, they could revoke the franchise I guess...and then just expand, but the playoffs are on and the Clippers are tied in their first round series. So it really wouldn't work. The way sports leagues work in the US, the league holds the keys to the kingdom. They decide where the teams will be when there's expansion, and when someone wants to move the other owners vote on whether it's allowed.

But now we're all getting weepy and outraged because someone doesn't like someone else?

Yeah, umm, that's not really it.

And Rush has SOOOOO many followers on dp doing the same.
Yet they all deny listening to him.
Just as they deny being a Republican . :lamo

Right, and it serves their interest to continue to use his property. Not to mention the $$ involved and the liability with all the TV contracts, venues, etc.

He is becoming the angry old man yelling at kids on his lawn. His over the top faux outrage at Colbert taking Letterman's job was pretty hilarious. Just another limosene conservative.

Money speaks volumes.

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

I have to say, from the way this has been handled from the beginning, that I don't agree with the outcome.

I grant you that the man's views are not ones I share or would ever condone, but there are lots of people who have private thoughts and opinions that if aired for all to hear would be embarrassing. I can imagine that a good number of black players in the NBA have said a few nasty things in their time, in private moments amongst themselves or with friends and if they were aired I'd probably not condone those either. And people like Spike Lee have said some pretty ugly things over the years and yet he's welcome to sit front row center at Knicks games, no questions asked.

This has been wasted as a teaching moment for others, in my view. I don't know what the outcome will be, legally, although I suspect with Sterling having $billions a lawsuit or some attempt to quash the commissioner's ruling will be sought, and just because I think the outcome is over the top, I'd hope he'd win. There certainly would be anti-trust laws and other legal avenues for the man to take if he really wants to fight this but at 80, perhaps he won't. If it was Mark Cuban, you could bet he would. But then, at 80, with all the money he'll ever need, getting $600 million or upwards of $1 billion for his team isn't relevant - it's the ownership, the toy, that is important to a man like him. The fact that he's own the team for over 30 years, likely losing money in many of those years, says that the man loves the game and his team.

People have done far worse things in this world with far lesser consequences and this is just politically correct overkill, in my opinion.

Oooh linky please. I gotta hear this.
I watched the clip on the Ed show.
There was actually more.

I used to go to MSNBC internet and track Big Eddie down.
His major clips, like today's interview with Rep. Lee Terry from Nebraska who supports KXL, should be on there.
Without Rush, MSDNC would have a lot less material with which to work .

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

Oy vey. What an ass.

Yeah, another lazy day without show prep for Rush...not like his listeners care much for accuracy.

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

If it was Mark Cuban, you could bet he would.
Mark Cuban wears tee-shirts to the games and runs on the floor like a kid after his Black player makes a 3-pointer to win the game.
Hugs all those sweaty Black players, and the White ones, because he's a player's owner .

Al Davis, the deceased former owner of the Oakland Raiders pretty well proved that legally wrong a couple of times, if I'm not mistaken.
