Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA[W:545]

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

There's nobody posting here who hasn't vented out loud things they'd never want the rest of polite society to hear, right?

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

I should get the GF in mucho legal trouble.

Her alibi of "he wanted me to tape our conversations" is thin.

hahaha, OK, and all he has to say is "No, I didn't." And then what?

That's common sense...wouldn't want to inject that into the conversation. ;)

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

I wondered of that was what you were talking about. It cost them, alot and the Pacer are just now getting back to being a decent team, at least the first half of the season. I agree though, anytime a player hits a fan should be criminal charges. Course I would let it go for a cool million.

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

I mentioned her because it's not the first time a league has come down on an owner for their beliefs or what they've said.
The argument I keep seeing is based on free speech. Marge Schott also was exercising her free speech.
I seem to recall her being suspended for something other than speech, but that was so long ago that I can't even remember what it was. The big problem is that if the league can't outright punish the speech at that level, you are on their radar and so anything else they may have overlooked is now on the table.

It's against the law to illegally tape a conversation (to begin with)

Once the immediacy and emotion settles out on this in a few months and we look at it objectively......

A man lost his company for an opinion he expressed in his own home to his longtime girlfriend.

What's next?

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

His GF being photographed with Magic set the old dude off. There's much more to this story.

BTW: she was also a Dodger's groupie.

Yeah she sounds like a **** hound.

I wonder if there's an upcoming provision in Obamacare that mandates anyone who expresses a dissenting opinion of it loses their job and is fined? There could be, we have to wait and see, as no one has read the whole thing yet.

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

Did you just say that a private organization with a leader having unfettered power making a command decision is the "free market doing its thing"?

Don't even think about using this against me in the future.

The commissioner said he talked to owners and had > 75% support for forcing Sterling out, he talked to players, I'm sure he talked to a lot of people. The majority opinion expressed was that he should be forced out.

Now how does this effect "the people"? Basketball fans not consisting of family or friends directly involved with the NBA are probably not dependent on them for income, a job, or a place to eat. So if you think this is the same as say Walmart making whatever decisions you feel like, you're mostly wrong.

Don't... don't do it, no.

They can make that decision though and it's not like owners take the use of that power lightly. I doubt owners ever want to have their teams taken from them. The NBA won't do anything without the support of most of it's owners.

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

That's all true in a public forum.

But should that apply to something he said in his kitchen over breakfast?

Heh, he got screwed for sure, but once it was made public, it can't be taken back and the consequences just have to play out.

Pretty much where this situation stands. Owners aren't going to vote to just take a team, because they know that could come down on them for a bad mistake of a different type later on.

Careful, you might get fired for such misogyny!

I'm sure it's in there somewhere. LOL

Doesn't mean the media is forbidden from publishing an illegal conversation.

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

The NBA is awesome. This is the same NBA who let DeShawn Stevenson play even after pleading "no contest" to having sex with a 14 year old girl, who he got drunk.

the owners are the NBA. DeShawn is an employee. D Sterling is an Owner...one of them. He reflects badly on them. He will cost them money.

Ironic that the NBA owners did to sterling what sterling was asking his GF to do because of pressures. Business does not like controversy and scandal...it's bad for business.

Smart phones, google glasses, eye implants, Xbox cameras......I suggest we all just shut the **** up for our own good.

I believe her suspension was about comments related to Hitler being a good leader (pre-holocaust)... Which he was and she was right - am I allowed to say this as a Jew?

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

He has a slam-dunk anti-trust suit against the NBA now. They effectively destroyed the fair market value of the Clippers.

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

Beign forced to no longer own the Clippers seems like it would be more a blessing than a curse. Good on em for the 'sentence'. Now we can all get back to ignoring the NBA like most people do.

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

As I said in the other thread, the fine is okay... guy's got more money than god anyway... but the rest is overkill. The guy didn't turn into racist scum overnight. Everyone who knew him, including the NBA officials, knew exactly what he was. Now that are basically taking his team away and banning him for life for being something that he has always been, and quite openly been at that. It's just political expediency, or perhaps they hated his guts for years and finally had the excuse to stick it to him.

I dunno. I won't be losing any sleep over it. The guy is racist scum.

I don't know about you, but I belileve that someone who forces a 14 year old girl to have sex with him after plying her with alcohol is a disgusting person. If that isn't scandal, I don't know what is. And it's far worse than what happened here, in the privacy of Sterling's home or wherever he had the conversation.

The NBA set itself apart 13 years or so ago when they found that kind of person acceptable to play in their league.

JMO.
