Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA[W:545]

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

Sharpton is just getting face time on TV. big deal

I realize that, but it doesn't make his actions any less ridiculous.

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

Of course, protecting their brand with black fans was a totally bad idea for the NBA.

Why do conservatives want to defend this guy by making "But, but....whites!" arguments? Do you guys really have nothing besides feeling persecuted? When did that become part of conservatism?

I'm not defending that bucket of puke on anything.

But this was just a conversation between him and his mistress that she recorded. This sets a precedent of consequences not yet understood. That's all I'm saying.

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

Sports teams are franchises, so, like any other franchise you agree to all rules determining ownership when you purchase the team. If an owner violates the franchise rules the league is well within their rights to prohibit certain actions. I don't think they can just take his team, but not sure on that one, they can restrict any activities from that point though.

From what I understand reading Mark Cuban's comments on Sterling today the League could revoke Sterling's ownership if it involved gambling. However, many owners have stated they do not want to deal with Sterling anymore, so Silver had to do something. I for one am happy to see Adam Silver doing something, I'd imagine Stern's stance would not nearly been as similar given most of Sterling's prior problems happened under Stern.

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

I thought he owned them, rocket. I'm confused as well, and hope someone can answer.

It's very harsh.
He does own him.

It is a franchisor-franchisee relationship.

In a real franchisor-franchisee relationship the franchisor usually sets whatever rules you have to follow and can revoke your right to own a franchise.

In the NBA the franchisor-franchisee relationship is a little more blurred. The owners help set up the rules and in a lot of the more harsh penalties it requires a vote by the owners.

At the same time this is all completely legal.

She might replace the Kardashians on Yahoo.

That would be great, I already know a lot more than I ever needed to know about their underwear problems.

Maybe we can learn a little about her underwear problems.

This is way OT, but why do I get the feeling she's a commando kind of girl?

It may be safer than spending that time in the bedroom with chippies.

He should just get on a giant boat and cruise until he is dead. Go find the Anti-Cheers where nobody knows his name.

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

Its not about supporting Sterling, its about free speech. In no way should he be fined for something he SAYS in his personal time while not being involved with the team at all. Why people love to throw their liberties away is beyond me. This doesn't just stop at high level owners and execs.

Sterling is an obvious douche, but again he is entitled his opinion and beliefs. He is an 80 year old entitled white guy. Things were WAAAY different when he was in his teens and growing up. Culture has changed a lot in the last 60 years, no? Its not like he was stating this over a press conference. Look at the same situation with Cliven Bundy. He is now being slammed for "wondering".

If you are white, you cannot have an open discussion about race without being called a racist, bigot, etc. Plain and simple. Great for progression.

Yes free speech, he expressed it and then others expressed their free speech that he should be shamed and pressured and sent away. Like I said, this is the "free market" doing its thing. He is part of an organization that has rules and as such they deemed it appropriate to fine him. If you disagree with this, do not partner with the NBA.

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

I used to love the NBA when I was younger, but they have let personnel standards slip for quite some time, choking coaches, kicking camera men, assaulting fans, flagrant physical violations, etc.

I am old school when it comes to sports, I prefer sportsmanship as I feel it represents not only the team, but the fan base and the city in which they play.

I agree with you. The "gansta ball"mentality soured me to the NBA years ago. That and the Clay Bennett sham did it for me.

Oh it absolutely is legal, I'm sure. I'll bet the NBA has some pretty high profile legal brainpan on its payroll.

I just don't like the precedent it sets. Privacy is something that should be encouraged and supported. JMO.

Clearly Adam Silver has made his mark. For good or for bad, this is his baby now.

That's kind of what I was thinking, gambling is pretty much a given in every sports league but not much else can revoke ownership. Stuff like this doesn't just happen, so I am sure Sterling was already hated but given professional courtesy, Silver pretty much had to do something here because it was not going to just go away like a lot of issues.

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

Personally, the most the NBA should have done was condemn the words. I'm sure all the NBA owners are proponents of free market economics (Yes, I AM laughing my ass off saying that) so they would be more than happy to let the market work itself out. New draftees would refuse to sign. No free agents would go there and at the end of all of their contracts those players current would move on. Fans would stop going(This one questionable as most ticket holders are white) but with a losing team they would stop attending. The revenue loss would be such that the guy would be forced to sell.

It isn't like this guy got on the ESPY's and said what he did, he said it in private, are we not allowed our private thoughts and opinions anymore?

I come up with the same analysis. He is the face of the team, and if his personal beliefs are that important to everyone, the team will suffer. I don't see the need for this kneejerk reaction, its mainly because we are and probably always will be in racially tense times. Maybe because the POTUS talked to the commisioner. Who knows, its not the free market speaking though.

Sterling broke the #1 rule. Don't **** where you eat.

Did you just say that a private organization with a leader having unfettered power making a command decision is the "free market doing its thing"?

That's all true in a public forum.

But should that apply to something he said in his kitchen over breakfast?

good riddance creep!

I just wish the black community could come together and fix the mountain of problems within their own culture with the same swiftness and high-mindedness. Let's hear some speeches about their outrage for THOSE issues as well. Problem is there is nobody white to blame at the end of those speeches.

Most of the owners aren't happy about it either. In fact Mark Cuban has made statements but at the end of the day..it does hurt the brand. It's the same reason Marge Schott lost her ownership though.

Honestly its not good for the fans of the Clippers either. Not player wants to play for someone they see as racist.

Yeah this is the best part of the entire episode, is that Don Sterling has been a known racist for a while, but it never cost the League money until now. It will be interesting to see what Cuban says because he though a fine and suspension would be acceptable, put taking the team from him is too far. What we have now is a ban and fine, which means Sterling can still own the team, but is probably going to be forced to sell.

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

In view of the fact that black NBA players have climbed into the stands to batter white fans they took exception to, and gotten away with it, I'd say this ruling is bull****.

Marge Schott wasn't banned for life, only a few years. She also offended many groups - Jews, Asians, blacks, and I can't remember who else. She professed her support for what Hitler did to the Jews. She was also caught on tape using some really ugly words, like the N word and the S word. She called a player a "fruit" (gay analogy).

I don't care about Sterling because he's an icky old coot, but what he did comes nowhere near what Schott did.
