Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA[W:545]

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

Wow.

This is way more than I ever expected would happen.

Same here...I am really surprised.

Way too harsh, imo...but in today's PC America, probably a smart financial decision.

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

Have you not noticed the reaction to this? You really think more people support Sterling? Dear lord................

So you have no support of your claim, you're basing it on your gut feeling. Okay.

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

She is just not very good looking either.

Iam sure she will get a reality show out of this.

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

He is 80 something isnt he? I think he can just appoint someone to run the team and still profit from it.

thats very possible, the commissioner cant just take his team so thats a no go but they can try to force him out.

They have legal options, one i was reading about all the owners or majority owners simply saying they dont want to work with him or be associated with him so using that legality to force hi out but it would be costly if he fought it.

Who knows what will happen but if he stays owner thats bad for his franchise and the NBA so im sure even if he is bought out he wont be an owner for long.

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

The question remaining.....what will Sterling do now?

You know he knows where the bodies are buried on multiple fronts. He could fight this, and basically overrun the remainder of the playoffs with 24/7 talk about this decision.

This may just be the beginning of the NBA's troubles with this.

That will be interesting.

He likes to sue people.

How would any of us feel having to pay 2.5 million and losing rights to your personal property for something you said in private?

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

Right-wing?

Yes. It's always right-wingers defending racist comments originating from white men's mouths. It's always left-wingers defending racist comments from non white mouths.

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

The commish said Sterling showed no remorse over the phone.
But by all means, shoot that message.
And the commish is lining up the owners to force him to sell .

Its not about supporting Sterling, its about free speech. In no way should he be fined for something he SAYS in his personal time while not being involved with the team at all. Why people love to throw their liberties away is beyond me. This doesn't just stop at high level owners and execs.

Sterling is an obvious douche, but again he is entitled his opinion and beliefs. He is an 80 year old entitled white guy. Things were WAAAY different when he was in his teens and growing up. Culture has changed a lot in the last 60 years, no? Its not like he was stating this over a press conference. Look at the same situation with Cliven Bundy. He is now being slammed for "wondering".

If you are white, you cannot have an open discussion about race without being called a racist, bigot, etc. Plain and simple. Great for progression.

Sort of like how you have no support for your claim that Sterling knows where the NBA's "skeletons" are buried.

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

Fairly predictable.

Remind me to never tell off a girlfriend who is literally half my age over a smart phone with a recorder. Wow.

Remember when Isaiah Thomas said if Larry Bird was black, he'd be just another good player? Would that get him banned now, too? Does this apply to players for anything they say, too?

Slippery slope, but here we are.

Of course, protecting their brand with black fans was a totally bad idea for the NBA.

Why do conservatives want to defend this guy by making "But, but....whites!" arguments? Do you guys really have nothing besides feeling persecuted? When did that become part of conservatism?

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

Don't know when he said it (time frame wise), but it was said here:

NBA bans Clippers owner Sterling for life - CNN.com

Thank you. That just came out which is why I hadn't heard that.

This is unreal (from the article)

Tuesday, the Rev. Al Sharpton, president of the National Action Network, called on Silver to meet this week with him and other civil rights leaders, according to a statement from the organization. Sharpton is planning to meet with the Congressional Black Caucus in Washington to discuss the situation, it said.

Come on. Don't our Congresspeople have anything better to do than entertain Al Sharpton to talk about basketball? This is as bad as them going after baseball players for steroids. They are supposed to be lawmakers, not the PC police nor the steroid police.

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

It shouldn't be about a demographic. It should be about the fact that anyone can break the law and essentially ruin another's livelihood - even when that person broke no laws.

Like the commissioner said, once the private tape was made public it was no longer relevant, they became separate issues. I do agree that is messed up what she did, maybe there should be penalties?

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

I thought he owned them, rocket. I'm confused as well, and hope someone can answer.

It's very harsh.
Sports teams are franchises, so, like any other franchise you agree to all rules determining ownership when you purchase the team. If an owner violates the franchise rules the league is well within their rights to prohibit certain actions. I don't think they can just take his team, but not sure on that one, they can restrict any activities from that point though.

She might replace the Kardashians on Yahoo.

That would be great, I already know a lot more than I ever needed to know about their underwear problems.

Maybe we can learn a little about her underwear problems.

I agree that it's gone completely overboard. This is between the NBA and Sterling and that's as far as it needs to go.

That right there is the crux of the problem. I'm surprised at how many people who collectively yell about their right to privacy don't seem to have an issue with this guy's right to privacy.

So now we know...anything you say in private can & will be used against you in the court of public opinion. It doesn't bother others, apparently. It sure bothers me.

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

Because this was an overreaction, and I don't believe in punishing people whose actions prove that he doesn't oppress blacks. There are real racists in this country who want to hurt black people. This wasn't one of them.

Where did I say "winning", by the way? Who won? Nobody.

This was an overreaction in your opinion, many other people were deeply hurt by this. Moving the goal posts and saying blacks must be "oppressed" for it to be racism is irrelevant. What you say matters in the U.S., especially if you are a high profile person that owns a basketball team largely consisting of blacks and you say something racist about blacks.

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

The NBA is awesome. This is the same NBA who let DeShawn Stevenson play even after pleading "no contest" to having sex with a 14 year old girl, who he got drunk.
I used to love the NBA when I was younger, but they have let personnel standards slip for quite some time, choking coaches, kicking camera men, assaulting fans, flagrant physical violations, etc.

I am old school when it comes to sports, I prefer sportsmanship as I feel it represents not only the team, but the fan base and the city in which they play.

I hope he sues the crap out of her, and he needs to bring up charges for illegal recordings. She should go to jail as well.

Also, if the NBA forces divestiture, he should sue the NBA under anti-trust and collect a fortune.

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

Personally, the most the NBA should have done was condemn the words. I'm sure all the NBA owners are proponents of free market economics (Yes, I AM laughing my ass off saying that) so they would be more than happy to let the market work itself out. New draftees would refuse to sign. No free agents would go there and at the end of all of their contracts those players current would move on. Fans would stop going(This one questionable as most ticket holders are white) but with a losing team they would stop attending. The revenue loss would be such that the guy would be forced to sell.

It isn't like this guy got on the ESPY's and said what he did, he said it in private, are we not allowed our private thoughts and opinions anymore?

Sharpton is just getting face time on TV. big deal

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

HAHA she is toxic now.

I find it interesting that they did this without ever giving him a chance to weigh in on it, and at the word of his (pissed off) ex-spouse. Whatever happened to "innocent until proven guilty", I wonder.

This is all backroom-shady-NBA-ownership-cabal crap at this point. I'm sure somewhere in the bylaws you have to agree to abide by a kangaroo court decision if you say something stupid in order to be allowed to own a team.

I'm sure he could force the NBA to spend a great deal of money defending itself from a breach of contract lawsuit.

So now I'm sure they will ban & fine everyone who says anything in private that hurts someone's feelings going forward, yes? They don't ban & fine the people who commit crimes, we know that much. I guess sticks & stones no longer break bones, but names really do hurt people.

Also, I guess misogyny doesn't rate with the NBA either otherwise every player with a rap label should get a lifetime ban.

Meanwhile, Sterling will laugh his way to the bank, and probably be the silent partner (and funder) in another major league sports purchase, with a lot of winking & nodding going on behind the scenes.

Maybe. But at 80 he might just want to take up fishing.

I'll bet his donations to the NAACP & underprivileged will dry up now too.

Most assuredly.
