Absolutely they can. If you don't think some people have been banned from attending league games and/or facilities for reasons related to the "image of the game", you're crazy.

If you believe what you posted, there is no way the NBA could ban Sterling for life from attending any NBA game or facility, particularly after he ceases to be an owner and league governor by virtue of that ownership. If he doesn't have a team, he's just like you or I at that point.

It's symbolic. When you are worth 1.9 billion dollars, a 2.5 million dollar fine is chump change.

He's not going to get top dollar because right now it's a damaged brand. In addition, the buyers know he's in a tough spot so the can low ball him. Finally, he's going to have to pay taxes on the capital gain. All in all, it's going to cost him tens of millions and maybe even more than 100 million
He bought the team in 1981 for $12 million. He will sell it for around $700 million. God, I wish I could take that kind of beating.

Again I have to ask where is the proof he doesn't respect black people. This is a race issue after all and not an employeer/employee issue.
His overt racism was giving young black men jobs and paying them $millions when he could have hired lousy white players for far less and still had the worst team in the league for about 30 of the past 33 yrs he's owned the team.

No, a business which is a public accommodation can not ban customers unless they have a legitimate business interest to protect.

If you think they have already done this, then name the customer that the NBA has banned to protect its' image

Sterling is not a customer; He's an owner and he signed a contract agreeing to be bound by the commissioner's decisions.

And if he sells the team, I think he would be free to attend games but I'm not certain of the terms of the agreement he signed with the NBA (ie no one is)

You don't know how much he lost on the team in the 33 yrs he owned and operated it - it's the Clippers, after all, not the Lakers. But most owners of sports teams don't buy them as a profit venture unless they are in the TV/Cable business and need content.

I could provide others, but I'll let you do the research if you'd like. Point is, as I stated, the NBA could ban Spike Lee from its games/facilities for racism detrimental to the image of the game - the same principle under which Sterling is being banned.

I'd be willing to bet he hasn't lost $688 million dollars. Owning a professional sports team today, with tv revenues and merchandise dollars, is a license to print money. If the Clippers get put up for sale, there will be multiple bidders waiting. $700 million might be conservative.

It is a pretty big deal, actually... some selfies can ruin a reputation.
