Let me ask you what can be used to effectively ramp up and ramp down the power supply in the place of coal power plants? My guess is you don't know anything about how our power is provided, supplied, nor do you understand the need to even ramp up or ramp down the power provided. Nuclear power plants can't effectively ramp up and ramp down power needs like a coal plant can and almost all renewable energy is supplemental only and not reliable for big city power needs.

My province has shut down all coal power plants in favour of nuclear and hydroelectric, it can work. If you really care that much burn natural gas. No matter what you do coal is the dirtiest form of energy you can get and it destroys the environment.

Meanwhile all over the world they are building coal powered plants. Todays coal powered plants have never been cleaner EVER. But you did not know this because you listen to the boobtube and research how much of it exactly?

China & India Are Building 4 New Coal Power Plants – Every Week | The Global Warming Policy Foundation (GWPF)

China & India Are Building 4 New Coal Power Plants – Every Week

Global demand for coal is expected to grow to 8.9 billion tons by 2016 from 7.9 billion tons this year. China is expected to add about 160 new coal-fired plants to the 620 operating now, within four years. During that period, India will add more than 46 plants.

Last summer, nearly half of India’s sweltering population suddenly found the electricity shut off. Air-conditioners whirred to a stop. Refrigerators ceased cooling. The culprits were outmoded power generation stations and a creaky electricity transmission grid.

Germany to Build Twenty Three New Coal-Fired Power Plants

Germany --(Ammoland.com)- It is amazing how biased the international media is when it comes to reporting on energy generation, specifically electricity.

In mid-August, Germany opened a new 2200MW coal-fired power station near Cologne, and virtually not a word has been said about it. This dearth of reporting is even more surprising when one considers that Germany has said building new coal plants is necessary because electricity produced by wind and solar has turned out to be unaffordably expensive and unreliable.

In a deteriorating economic situation, Germany’s new environment minister, Peter Altmaier, who is as politically close to Chancellor Angela Merkel as it gets, has underlined time and again the importance of not further harming Europe’s – and Germany’s – economy by increasing the cost of electricity.

He is also worried that his country could become dependent on foreign imports of electricity, the mainstay of its industrial sector. To avoid that risk, Altmaier has given the green light to build twenty-three new coal-fired plants, which are currently under construction.

Yes, you read that correctly, twenty three-new coal-fired power plants are under construction in Germany,

so tell me do you really the few we are closing will help the environment if they open the 200 or so i just posted? that is just from three countries.

when the lights start going off here maybe you will change your mind then?

Too bad in China you can't see across the street half the time. You can even see it in the U.S., it causes massive environmental damage. It is cleaner than ever but is still ****ing dirty. Coal is quick and dirty, but it is not a long term solution.

China is wicked dirty but it is not from coal powered plants! it is because of all the OTHER industry they slave labor out to their citizens.
But again glad we went here:2wave:

Yes it is, the coal power plants are contributing to it and the power plants are powering the polluting industry. Not to mention the damage caused by mining it. Do you think that coal is completely clean now?

yep those that was what mid 90's ?

Where are all the warnings and fear mongering about acid rain in Russia. I mean we both agree china is the dirtiest place on earth.
one would thing the acid rain would be so bad russia and china be doing something about it.

All i could find was this old scare mongering article from 1984? really well that was when they started the fear over it.

But hey whatever, we are not even building any new nuclear power plants either. go figure

A) Well...of course they have never been cleaner 'ever'...name a technology that goes backwards in efficiency over it's life?
That's like saying a disease has never killed less people because the first year it killed 1000 people and the next year it killed only 999.

B) Yeah...how is all that coal producing electricity going for China so far?

'China Smog at Center of Air Pollution Deaths Cited by WHO'

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-...more-than-aids-diabetes-who-report-shows.html

'New coal technology'...that seems to be the right's solution to everything.

Global warming, heating costs, abortions, the Dallas Cowboys sucking...more 'new coal technology' will help.

I am not convinced about global warming...but I have seen enough evidence to take it seriously.

And 'new coal technology' screams of cons saying 'we don't believe in global warming, but we will just throw the title 'clean coal' on coal plants and hope that will appease those left-wing, green pinko's without sacrificing our swimming pools'.

What are those industries doing that makes China's air so bad?

They must be putting something into the atmosphere.

Actually as a good solid power source, nuclear is a good way to go. The problem comes with ramping up and ramping down the demand for power at a given time. Coal does that far superior to anything at the moment. Nuclear has come a LONG way in the ways of security and safety since Chernobyl and getting rid of the waste (90% of it) isn't that hard with today's technology in refinement.

^ Germany is actually a perfect example of where we're headed in energy prices. Here I pay about 27 cents (USD) per KWh, comparing that with my home in Texas where we had ~8-9 cents (USD) per KWh.

embrace the s@#k!

Luckily the country did not start innovating alternative energy and phasing out coal as early and forcefully as other countries. This means the technology has had time to develop and it is now getting to a point that makes it halfway viable. If the US stays that course, takes its time, then it might work okay. Just don't install inefficient plant. You are saddled with it for a long time.

That may get worse, if the Ukraine thing forces a shift away from Russian energy. The natural gas and oil will not be much more expensive per se, but large amounts of infrastructural investment will become less efficient while new investments will be required.

We sell electricity to other provinces, we have a surplus. Ontario has the largest nuclear power plant in the world. Ontario and Quebec which holds a bulk of the population through either nuclear or hydroelectric. Alberta and Saskatchewan are the only provinces left that mainly relies on coal and even then they are ramping up natural gas. The territories expect the aren't even connected to the grid. The Yukon provides 95% of it's power form hydroelectric.

What switch to "renewable energy" is that?

US electricity prices are going to "skyrocket" according to Obama, who pledged that when he was first elected.

And unless the US gets its head out of its ass on the Columbia River treaty, your imported hydro-electricity is going to skyrocket too. But then, the US wants to tax hydro electricity because of all the environmental "damage" they do when constructed.
