Canada has now overtaken the U.S. to become the nation with the wealthiest middle class according to this Globe article, Canada matched the U.S. in median income in 2010 and we have now surpassed the U.S. This is part due to an almost 20% growth income since 2000 while U.S. only had 0.3%, many Western European countries also saw better growth.

According to the NYT it is: “Because the total bounty produced by the American economy has not been growing substantially faster here in recent decades than in Canada or Western Europe, most American workers are left receiving meagre raises,” the New York Times report says. “Finally, governments in Canada and Western Europe take more aggressive steps to raise the take-home pay of low- and middle-income households by redistributing income.”

I have to say I am not surprised that the American economy stagnated income wise. Sure some individual states have seen growth but overall the U.S. is in the same place it was in 2000. You can't blame one party or president either since both the Republicans and Democrats have had power during that time.

Obama and the Libs can party in the street on this news...

color me shocked... not.. this was the Obama agenda... you can only make peopel "equally poor"....

Re: Canada's Middle Class Richest In Study of Big Nations

You can mostly pin it on an overall methodology. The US gears its economy into creating huge rewards for a few, and few rewards for the many. This is a terrible way to make the national overall into a more prosperous place. Canada's priorities, meanwhile, don't attempt to funnel all the rewards toward an elite few (to the same extent). Of course they're doing better.

You are still second overall and another reason for the reduced growth is the income inequality in the U.S. which is by far the worst of large Western nations.

Re: Canada's Middle Class Richest In Study of Big Nations

I am not surprised at all. We have collectively been fools, with fools for politicians, and a general populace who has become lazy and complacent.

The reason is Obama and the Libs... period jobs are leaving the USA in droves due to Obamas hate of the USA

Canada has substantially higher taxes, a much more socialized healthcare system, and better environmental protections. I don't think you really have any idea what's going on here.

sure do... I dont care what Canada has or doesnt...

we sunk to Canadas level.. next we can drop to Kenya

The rules of Capitalism works... Obama is breaking the known ways to succeed and have upward mobility... he is creating a voting block of poor needing hand outs...that was always his plan..

The wonder is, they've just gotten here now. I'll remind again, Canada has the same amount of land as the entire US with the same resource wealth we had before we sold off/used a ****load of it - with one tenth the population.

Not when it stagnates at the top. That is one of the things the article is about.

the real issue is that Obama is vested in having the middle class shrink and have people drop into the poor so they can be beholding to hand outs and the lib agenda..you do that through destruction of wealth and have the wealthy in retreat and not hiring or buying or not having known rules of employment like Obamacare and heavy tax loads and the rancid green agenda that is going so spike energy as Obama promised,,,,mis it all together and its poison for the middle class which is being destroyed BY AGENDA... its a plan

That terrible socialist system enjoyed faster growth in wealth for the middle class than we did. If that's equally poor, then I'm down for getting poor like a Canadian.

More capitalist and low tax, definitely not. We just know how to run a country.

household-income-monthly-median-since-2000.gif

As the chart above shows, the median income in the U.S. has remained between $54K and $55.6K for nearly a decade, and in 2009 right after the housing bubble incomes took a nose-dive. Furtheremore, the 2013 marginal tax rates for the upper crust is only 39.6% for earners starting at $425,000. Not only has the income level increased by $154K since 2011, the tax rate only increased by 4.4% from a previous rate of 35%. Compare that to middle-class earnings between $35K-$250 and you'll see things differently...that is IF you can shed those partisan/hate-filled blinders and look at the facts. Here...let me help you.

This chart from the Liberty Tax Services* shows that a single wage earner making between $34,500-$83,600 paid up to $4,750 (25%) in federal income taxes for 2011. For 2013, a wage earner making the minimum $34,500 pays $4,733 - a mere savings of $17. Big freaking whoop!

Fact is, wages have remained flat in the U.S. for a very long time.

*The only reason I used the Liberty Tax Services chart is because I couldn't find one for tax year 2011 at IRS.gov.

No. Canada is busy selling off resources we depleted from our lands over the last 100 years. We're buying a great deal of them. There are less people to share in the take from that than we've had in the US over the last hundred years. Now, there a few ways for a society to deal with the sell off of their resources. Like the Saudis who concentrate the vast influx of wealth into a few families while doing nothing to prepare their society for the inevitable time when the resources are sold off. Or like the Canadians who have used the influx to build infrastructure and diversification into their society.

Such non-sense!

As I've just illustrated, wages have remained flat for far longer than 2000-2009 for Middle-Class Americans. And since most jobs are in the service sector which don't require advanced skills, people are finding it hard to find quality for that pay a living wage. I can certainly understand why there has been a push for social programs in America by Democrats. In hard economic times, you want to ensure your country provides a social safety net for its citizens. Otherwise...let's just say I don't want to imagine how bad BAD could get. Doesn't mean such programs have to remain in effect forever. Jobs and skills training (education) are the keys, and so far I only see on party trying in earnest to do both, whereas, the other side continues to give corporate handouts their lobbyist partners at every turn. Now, if the idea is to do both - sustain the bottom and prepare the top for job growth - then both sides need to say it. Instead, what I see happening is "cut entitlement programs...give wealth creators a bigger tax break".

No we are doing the opposite actually, we used to be diversified, now we are throwing all of our eggs into the oil and energy basket. We are building infrastructure, Alberta's infrastructure.

Canada is a high cost country, due to its size and low population

The cost of shipping a truck load (26 pallets of goods) from alberta to Ontario for in stance is roughly $5 000. I expect quite a bit higher then shipping costs in the US,

Like Carjosse has stated Canada is losing its manufacturing industry, Mexico is building more cars then Canada now. Canada has lost a huge number of well paying manufacturing jobs to the US, China, and Mexico for instance. Of course the dollar moving from $0.6 USD to $1.10 USD and now around $0.88 has played a role in the loss of jobs. Ontario has gone from being what is called a have province to a have not province due to those losses

Though then again we are making rather large gains in the non-manufacturing sector which is what we are good at. Ontario is a have not province by about 5$, if there wasn't a gas plant scandal Ontario would not have.

I wonder if it has anything to do with:
