'Duck Dynasty' family cancels stage show at JQH Arena

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - JTK Productions said Thursday it cancelled the planned appearance of members of the hit A&E show "Duck Dynasty" due to "unforeseen circumstances." It turns out the reason is a low number of ticket sales.

Let's first look at what happened with the fall of Duck Dynasty from a nonpolitical standpoint. In the heart of the Bible Belt, there are many Conservatives who, while not accepting gays, did not see Roberton's remarks about America being a better nation when Jim Crow laws existed, or his remarks on marrying underage girls, as very Christian. Yes, the tide turned against Robertson and his show, and this seems to be a case of someone who could not handle "stardom" without sticking his foot in his mouth. But what about the people in rural Louisiana, where Robertson comes from? I have been there, in Cameron and Calcasieu Parishes, and I can tell you first hand that, while racism does exist there, it is dying out. These are some of the most Conservative people in the nation, and most of them will give you the shirt of their back if you need it, and color is no longer a prerequisite to get that shirt. I have been to clubs there where blacks and whites not only got along, but were friends with each other. This is no longer the deep South of the 1950's and 1960's. The Klan has been eviscerated, and people of colors both black and white are more tolerant today. It is unfortunate that the man who got a hit show on the air at A&E does not share in that tolerance, and has given a black eye to a culture that is American as apple pie.

OK, now to get political. America has changed for the better, but the politics on both sides of the aisle does not recognize that change. Many Democrats will still bash the Deep South, only because it is the Deep South. However, I submit to them that there is less racism in the Old South than there is in New York City. Don't believe me? Then do a Google search on red-lining, which is a common practice in the North, a practice which denies black home ownership in lilly white subdivisions. And to the Republicans' support of Robertson? Let it go. You are better than that. Prove it.

Redlining is a reality that is more in play than ever. It's also more racist and elitist biased, than any other practices.

My parents, back in the early 60's, got a small brick house on my father's GI bill loan for $12K. It was a low end neighborhood, on a poorer end of town. After living there for several years, my parents suddenly decided to sell. I ask them years later why we moved from that nice little house, and they said, "the area was being bought up by blacks and if we didn't sell, we'd have lost half the houses value and been surrounded by people who didn't like us." I had never heard my parents say anything mean towards other races, but this was a reality that they had to deal with, like all our neighbors did. This was a more innocuous form of redlining, though not one white family stayed and they couldn't of all been racist.

There were some good aspects about those earlier decades that people try to evoke about responsible values, lower crime rates, national pride, social etiquette and general politeness, but there were some ugly realities about prejudices and bigotry on the surface, that sunk deeper into the conscious mindset of the business classes.

This is the question you've got to ask yourself, who does more harm to peoples rights: a bunch of dumb hillbilly's saying a derogatory word that has little direct effect on anyone but their own big ears, or some nice people wearing $5000 suits & shoes, with a big smile saying "Loan, application, appeal, contract, job, mortgage, subsidies- denied, denied, denied! Have a nice day." :)

All you have to do is ignore the Willy's of the world and they'll fade away, but it's your politicians and money people holding all the keys, to all the doors.
 
I never understood why anyone watched the show in the first place, they are all fakes.

I should have gotten in on this earlier.

I am from the very deepest of the Deep South - the Mississippi Delta. Specifically, I was raised in and (until a couple months ago) my longtime family home was in Sunflower County, which is 71% black. Read that again, Sunflower County is 71% black. My family is buried in graves at the local Southern Baptist church all the way back to just after the Civil War. In other words, I've got very deep roots in the Delta...and very few people know the South like I do. I grew up (moderately) racist and deeply conservative, as pretty much all whites there do to this day.

Now, look at my political lean. "Progressive". I'm the "black sheep" of the family, as it were. When I took my Asian wife home to meet the family, my mother pulled me off to one side and said, "I wish you'd married a black girl instead." And in context, she wasn't being complimentary to the African-American community in the least.

Anyway, I was there a couple years ago to visit my (strongly conservative and moderately racist) brother. While there, I noticed that despite the county being 71% black and it was August 2012, there was not a single Obama sticker or sign or t-shirt to be seen. There's a black friend of the family there, named Eddie, and I asked him why there's no Obama stickers. He looked at me with sad, sad eyes (he knew I was an Obama supporter) and said, "Pete, you know why."

And he was right - I did know why. I knew that any black with an Obama sticker or t-shirt would soon find himself and/or his family members out of a job, and may even find things done to his car. The blacks in this 71% black county did not dare to show their support for Obama because they knew what would probably happen to them if they did.

That, sir, is the face of real racism.

Sure, you'll find racism in NYC, just as you'll find it anywhere else...but nowhere in America will you find racism more endemic, more thoroughly a part of the local culture, than in the Mississippi Delta. I've been racist, and I know how racists think, what drives them, the 'code' that they use in speaking in order to claim that they're not being racist. And no, NYC is not nearly so racist as the Deep South.

That show sucked to begin with.
 
I love the show, and never watched it until the Phil gay comment media event. Can't believe it took so long for me to get around to seeing it but glad I did. I only DVR a few shows this is one of them. Question though? Is this really breaking news worthy?

How about instead of anyone patting themselves on the back on how they're less racist than they used to be, how about we strive as a nation to make racism, which is still commonplace in the lives of many people in this country, unthinkable?
 
So, the most popular show in America is summarily trashed on this forum.

I don't watch any reality shows, but this is telling of this forum.

This forum doesn't reflect the nation whatsoever. Might as well be a coffee shop on Castro street.

Or it COULD be that the show was a hit, everyone rode it for what it was worth, and like every fad...tends to come and go.

You know what used to be real popular? Those American Chopper guys. Oh yeah...and American Hotrod. And Bass Fishing with Bill Dance. And Dance Fever.

Nah...it must be cuz the country objects to their politics.

The show was a gimmick-a dang good one. The business was started in 1972 and has an average gross income of about 40 million a year and employs thousands.

Meh, they probably grew the beards to appeal to their fan base. Look like a bunch of big fakers to me. "Let's see how much money we can make by bringing ourselves down to the level of the common person, because we haven't been common since 1972." :roll:
