Russia, West reach surprise deal on Ukraine crisis

Geneva (AFP) - Russia, Ukraine, the US and EU reached a surprise deal Thursday on de-escalating the worsening Ukrainian crisis, in a ray of hope for the former Soviet republic that has plunged into chaos.

The agreement reached in Geneva comes as a strong contrast to earlier hawkish comments made by Russian leader Vladimir Putin, who left the door open for intervention in Ukraine.
Not perfect, but it's a start, and the latest crisis has been defused. Still a long way to go, though, to settle this.

    Article is here.

Granted, it's not from yahoo news, it's from the guardian but the topic is there.

I certainly hope this will be a legitimate path to resolving the situation. However, it seems Putin sometimes like to act outside of what the Russian diplomats agree to.

Seems eerily like a stall tactic.

My gut is, the Russian people don't want Ukraine, nor does the political establishment in general, except for Putin himself. He's got a Hitler complex about him.

It wouldn't shock me if he was assassinated by his own.

I do love a happy ending

“I think if Thomas Jefferson were looking down, the author of the Bill of Rights, on what’s being proposed here, he’d agree with it. He would agree that the First Amendment cannot be absolute.” - Chuck Schumer (D). Yet, Madison and Mason wrote the Bill of Rights, according to Sheila Jackson Lee, 400 years ago. Yup, it's a fact.

I think you are 100% correct. Evidently, there is just not alot there aside from dying rust belt towns where about 50% of the population do not think of themselves as "Russian". Even Russia occupied the entire Donetsk province, it was going to be a long term head ache and long term a cash drain.

Not me. I think Erod's right. The Russian leadership just concluded that Crimea was worth it for a variety of reasons. The rust belt, though, was not worth it in the long term.

This is hardly the first time people have reached an "agreement" to "de-escelate" the situation. You have to see these things implemented before you can start cheering "peace in our time!" and how they are implemented will be the real trick.

I hope it holds, but it looks like a ruse. At the same time, Russia has cancelled NATO overflights of the Russian border with Ukraine. These have been part of the 1992 Open Skys Treaty. Naturally, we can cancel their overflight rights too, but the last time I looked, we don't have troops massed on an international border threatening invasion.
