The Holocaust horror competes with the horror of the Holomodor which killed 7.5 million Ukrainians in one year. This mindset of Jews being special victims of genocide doesn't get as much traction in societies which have suffered their own genocides. So because the culture doesn't elevate the Holocaust as highly as we do in the horror category in the West, they're not as sensitive to the issue. Ask regular Americans to describe what the Holomodor was. Why don't we know? Aren't the lives of 7.5 million dead Ukrainians worth honoring?

Secondly, because they're not ignorant of the Holocaust, I wouldn't put it past the militia to play up on the allusion to history. They're looking to intimidate and this is a very effective tool to achieve that end. They're not as culturally restricted in trotting out this tool due to their own history with genocide.

People earlier in the thread have stated that Pushilin admitted that it came from his organization but was not a decision on the part of his organization. If that's true, then saying it as "having no connection" with the fliers is a bit dishonest, don't you think?
 
I don't know if I would put too much stock in an admission. He may have just accepted that as true and admitted it rather than being caught denying something if it turned out to be true. After all, they were wearing uniforms and had symbols of the Donetsk Republic. Since there is not a lot of organization amongst them he may have considered it possible and thus better to say it was some rogue members. You could just as easily have some people pretending to be part of the pro-Russian groups disseminating such fliers to try and tarnish their reputation.

The world was not ignorant of democide or mass atrocity before the Holocaust. What made the Holocaust so significant and so seared into our collective conscience is the uniqueness of its horror. That being said the Holodomer is widely recognized, in the US for example there is a national memorial in Washington DC and a day of remembrance. It is less well known because it antedates the mass atrocities of the Second World War and because scholars continue to wrangle over the details. The background, intentions, and purpose of the events which led to the Holodomer remain hotly debated in academic circles.

None of this alters the reality that there is a deep vein of anti-semitism in Ukraine, probably moreso than any other European country possibly even Russia.

Hmmm. an interesting take on racial systematic murder. I recall the great famine in the Ukraine along with the great famine in Communist China, used quite a bit to show the failure of Communism- now it appears it will be used to show a deliberate genocide against the Ukrainian people. I suppose mass murder can do double duty.

I've always heard the deaths directly tied to the famine as 3 to 4 million.

Now the major difference I see with the Ukrainian famine and the holocaust is the Ukrainians are very biased against other races/ethnic groups/nationalities- Tartars, Jews, Poles, Romas...

I recall thousands of Ukrainians helping round-up, murder in fields, transport to extermination camps, guard these camps and serve in the Nazi SS.

I don't recall thousands of Jews in 1932 helping starve Ukrainians.

Perhaps the Ukrainians are not as sensitive to the Holocaust as the West isn't because of their genocide victims but their genocide atrocities committed on the Jews.

Interesting thread with some thoughtful posts. I believe the "Jew registration" nonstory was cobbled up at the Kremlin. If that's the case, and it probably is, it was a masterful bit of propaganda. The Russians are very good at that. It certainly got the world's knees jerking, didn't it? And it further served to portray Ukraine's "government" as the posse of fascist rabble that it is. And if it was the brainchild of one of Putin's Jewish PSYOPS functionaries, well that wouldn't surprise me one bit either.

You must be one of those folks who automatically disagrees with anything mainstream media presents, probably because it disagrees with your desire to see conspiracies everywhere. You have no legitimate source, as is consistent with conspiracy theorists. You have no actual substantiation, as is consistent with conspiracy theorists. You base your position on anonymous, "my cousin's boyfriend's, mother's, brother's, neighbor overheard the information at the grocery store", comments... as is consistent with conspiracy theorists. Truth is, you people suffer from confirmation bias. You don't want to believe something, so you find the most idiotic sources that support your position... as is consistent with conspiracy theorists.

So, until you show us a legitimate, unbiased source that actually has some credible substantiation, your comments were conspiracy theory comments.
