This is a great choice, and made so quickly.

CBS names Colbert as Letterman replacement

CBS moved quickly to replace David Lettermanafter the late-night host announced his retirement last week. Confirming speculation, Stephen Colbert, of Comedy Central's Colbert Report, will take over the Late Show sometime next year.

Colbert, whose current contract expires at year end, signed a five-year deal to host the show, which will begin when Letterman decides to step down when his contract expires in August 2015, though he could choose to leave earlier next year.

MORE: Top 10 reasons we're excited about Colbert

"Simply being a guest on David Letterman's show has been a highlight of my career," Colbert said in a statement. "I never dreamed that I would follow in his footsteps, though everyone in late night follows Dave's lead. I'm thrilled and grateful that CBS chose me. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go grind a gap in my front teeth."

Counter-move: Time for NBC to bring Leno back.

I'd rather he keep doing what he's doing. His voice is powerful in the realm of politics and media analysis to just do straight comedy. I think he'll lose something by having to fit that mold rather than the more politically focused one he has now.

No, I love The Colbert Report. :(

Limbaugh: Colbert Hire Is Declaration Of 'War On The Heartland Of America'

"CBS has just declared war on the Heartland of America," Limbaugh said Thursday on his radio show. "No longer is comedy going to be a covert assault on traditional American values. Now it's just wide out in the open."
"What this hire means is a redefinition of what is "funny" and a redefinition of what is comedy," he continued. "It's the media planting a flag here. I think it's maybe the media's last stand, but it's a declaration. There's no unity in this hire. They've hired a partisan, so-called comedian to run a comedy show."

Thread needed some comedy.

We still have Jon Stewart. I'm looking forward to seeing Colbert on late night.

I prefer The Colbert Report. It's much funnier, and more politically poignant, IMO.

It doesn't matter much to me, but Colbert seems like a really strange choice. Good for him signing a five year contract - I hope his money is guaranteed since I have a feeling he'll never make it anywhere near five years.

Maybe late night will be funnier with Colbert in charge. We'll find out.

I think he'll do well, it's just every time I'll see him I'll be wishing that The Colbert Report was still on. No way that Late Night will be funnier than that. It might be more money, but creatively, it'll be a downturn.

Interesting choice. Colbert has excellent delivery and great interviewing, but it's been "in-character" for so long that I wonder how it will work out in the Late Show format.

The only Late night talk host I find funny is Conan O Brien. Leno was just background noise to old people screwing.

Love Jon Steward and Stephen Colbert.

This looks like a good choice, I hope CBS doesnt end up forcing him into their own agenda.

O'Brian was ok but the skits he did were so low brow they were embarrassing to the human race. Even the actors...which are a dime a dozen on the NYC streets and desperate...looked embarrassed to be doing them. Very 'juvenile male, bathroom humor' stuff. No appeal IMO.

I see his style being rooted in Vaudeville and slapstick, similar to the Young Ones. Which is exactly why I find him funny.

I am not sure how funny Colbert can be now outside of his character.

A host who isn't funny or relevant being replaced by a schmuck who has no broadbased appeal.

Hmm... CBS trying to show that NBC isn't the only network that can't find a replacement for a late night show?

Colbert is great, I hope he can turn the late show into something worth watching. I haven't been interested in any of them in many years.

Hoping Colbert can do well, been a few years since I watched any of network late shows regularly. Be interested to see how he does not playing a character, been so long I can't remember if I've seen him out of character or not.

As long as he isn't terrible at it, might be able to give Fallon a run for his money.

No broad-based appeal? lol

Unless they can get Jon Stewart to move to CBS and open for him, I suspect his ratings will probably resemble Piers Morgans in pretty short order.But...good for him. It might be fun to see what his real persona is.

That's kind of my thought too. He's definitely talented and I like him as an interviewer...but the shtick he's been doing for years isn't going to work as a late night network host. I absolutely think he can adapt, but at the same time it's a question of whether or not how he adapts actually interests people.
