Justices strike down political donor limits

Individuals are as capable of corrupting the system as PACS and corporations. The differentiation between the two is arbitrary, meaningless at least, because the end result is identical.

Exactly.

I don't know how one would even begin to quantify the naivete of this statement. Are you aware of the purpose that money raised is used for?

Who pays the most taxes, Cardinal?

Uh-oh! The Libbos are going to go bezerk over this.

What you're assuming here is that the Democratic Party is really the party of the poor people. Do you think that is really true?

I'm not assuming anything.

I'm correctly acknowledging that the Democrat Party has successfully used class warfare as a campaign strategy when it's far more accurate to say the wealthy are getting the short end of the stick in the United States.

Again, have you looked at tax distribution in this country?

Uh-oh! The Libbos are going to go bezerk over this.

Ironically, yes, as Obama continues handing out envelopes full of government gratitude to those he's indebted.

Who pays the most taxes, Cardinal?

People who earn enough to be in the top 10%, but not in the top 1%. In other words, people who can afford to donate the previous max donation.

The people who pay the least taxes are those in the very top.

In all seriousness, how can you possibly believe this?

You're exactly the type of low income voter I'm talking about.

Even better!

Funny how those who limits support Reid and Pelosi, two of the most donor beholden people to ever hold office.

This just means the unions will not have to skirt the rules by claiming millions of small donations from each of their members anymore.

Who pays the most taxes, Cardinal?

Utterly irrelevant. One man, one vote -- the principle that all citizens are entitled to equal legislative representation. The addition of campaign contributions such that wealthier people are given disproportionate say in the legislation that is created makes a mockery of the principle of one man, one vote. Unless, that is, you specifically believe in a plutocracy, in which case the divide between your beliefs and mine are so great that we would have nothing further to discuss.

I am? Wow... good to know. Sorry, I'm feeling kind of smug at the moment.

I know this because I'm good at math. I'm also educated enough to know that there are other taxes besides Federal Income Tax. Add all of that in and the top 10% pays about 30.5%, the top 1% sits around 29%, and the top 400 families are about 20%.

File this under "duh", although you can never be quite sure with this Supreme Court.

The fact that it's 5-4 is astounding. That "four" don't even think you should have to present a valid ID to vote, but they want to tell valid voters what to do with their money.

GOD CNN SUCKS. They got me as well.

Supreme Court strikes down cap on campaign contributions | Al Jazeera America

The Supreme Court didn't strike down the donation limits to individual campaigns; they struck down the overall donation limit. It's not a great thing, but overall, not a big deal.

I predict that this will put a lot of money in a lot of peoples pockets.

I doubt that it will increase democracy in the USA.

Yayyy this is so great. Open the floodgates to spending. Let the rich dominate the political process. Show us how much our politicians are worth! Democracy for sale!

Why people applaud this nonsense is beyond me. Cant you see whats happening? Our leaders, our representatives are literally being bought and sold. They dont represent us. They represent the big donors.

The individual should be unlimited. Corporations and other non-hunan entities should be banned from political contribution.

That isn't the ruling of the land today.
Though you are not a DEM, DEMs need to quit whining and deal with the facts on the ground.
No solace can be taken from McCain's words on campaign financing.
Invest in the campaign finance industry.

Corporations are people according to this USSC ruling.
We all need to deal with it .

The only words I respect so far from the nine Justices came from C. Thomas.
At least he was honest in his separate opinion.
I also agree with Robert's summation about "word games" and no link proven with corruption.

Too bad it's taken Dems SIX months to run their own very good hit ads in the current hot Senate races, dominated by Koch money .

Terrible...

The reason we HAD limits was so that candidates would not be beholden to individuals.

EG. Sheldon Adelson is a casino mogul. He is strongly against online gambling because it cuts into his profit margins. He's only going to fund candidates who oppose online gambling. Now watch, GOP candidates will move to oppose online gambling.

Similar things are going to happen with the Democrats.

It's funny, the so called "originalists" are among the most activist judges in American history.

The solution isn't to silence the People, the solution is to deal with the crooked politicians. Fix the PROBLEM.

There was never any limit - this ruling was redundant.

There was a $500 per donation cap, however there was nothing in place to stop people from making multiple donations of $500 each. So if someone wanted to donate $1,500 for example they would have to break that amount up into 3 separate donations..

Our Leaders and Representatives have always been bought and sold.
Look at the influence of the 4th estate before Modern technology exploded media.

Dems must continue their new approach with hit ads in the close Senate races and forget about things they can't change.
Asking Americans if they want to "lose this and that aspect of ACA that is popular" is a winning ticket .

The problem isn't the gasoline, it's the fire. If we put the fire out the gasoline wouldn't burn.

The rich bought the SCOTUS. Who would have thunk it?
