U.S. requires new cars to have backup cameras[W:26]

Umm yes

the camera if it is any good is at least 200. the lcd in the front to view it is another 200 or so. then the cost of putting it in and installing it.
factor in overhead and profit margin yes. very much so.

tech packages already to include these on the cars range from 600-1000 already.

I think your estimates are a bit off. Companies are doing lane detection with a $50 mono camera. There's a huge push in the industry to get simple reliable cost effective sensor packages. Hence now you can source an LCD for $10-$15 and a decent camera for another $10. Think about everything your phones does; battery, highres screen, multiple cameras, multiple cell radios, bluetooth, wifi, a complete OS etc... and that's only a few hundred.

It's really not going to impact the cost of a car.

proof or evidence because they haven't come down yet .

Economies of scale are at play here. They don't sell all that many now. The more they install, the lower the cost.

But the issue is one of losing yet another freedom - the freedom to choose whether or not we buy a camera. Millions of bureaucrats are busy figuring out how to control our lives to a greater degree. It is frightening to me.

No outrage. Seems like a waste of money to me.

They said the same thing about seat belts. Today's technology makes back-up cameras cheaper than those first seat belts too.

You are kidding I hope. Freedom to buy a camera? What is that? I think it is the freedom to back up over your grandson that you are complaining about.

They don't sell because they are too expensive and people don't want them.
no the more money they make as they have to install the tech package in every car.

they won't have that problem now. the government is now forcing you to buy it.

classic strawman

Just like headlights. It's all relative.

This is just another example of government dictating what products will be available in the open market. If a certain feature in a car becomes standard should be left to the market, and the government should not be involved in changing what the people can buy because they find there to be a benefit to something.

If a person is dumb enough to not know where the grandson is I highly doubt they will look at the monitor when they are backing up.

Classic diversion. What is your complaint then? That you might not have an excuse for backing into someone?

There was no excuse to doing it before. For decades on decades the vast majority of people did fine without a camera to assist them backing up.

Your usual bull ****. I am a right winger and have one in my wifes car and we both love it......Thinking about getting one in my truck to.

I don't know why you would need one NP, its pretty obvious that going backwards is easy for you....its moving forward that seems to be the problem.

And multitudes of generations got by with a horse. Fear of change and the future is a sickness you know.

Who is scared of the future? We are talking about a camera to assist people to do something in cars that they have been doing just fine without since the creation of the car.

You think wrong.

I'm not against cameras or seat belts. I'm against government dictating them.

and the strawman continues.

Same old line. Still have your guns though. It's all good.

You think wrong.

The only thing he was thinking about when he made that comment is how to make you seem like an evil asshole.

Have one on all three of my cars, but aside from making sure I don't hit a rail or something when I'm backing into a parking spot, it's not that useful.

If you are using this to "see" behind your car, you're going to get hurt. The real danger isn't in view on the screen.

You don't have to drive at night.

Gosh, I bet we needed the government to mandate headlights. I mean, the customers wouldn't actually have started to buy cars with lights or anything. Nope.

Same old line. Still have your guns though. It's all good.

Lot of guessing going on here. I can figure out how to run my life without the government doing it for me. But thanks.
