BP confirms oil spill into Lake Michigan from Whiting refinery

This is beginning to sound like a broken record.

I guess I won't plan on fishing Lake Michigan this summer.

If you're changing your fishing plans, you clearly didn't read the article. It was a small leak, which due to the cold temps caused the oil to quickly harden and make a clean up simple.

And comparing this to Deepwater Horizon spill is downright disingenuous.

You can thank your lucky stars you cancelled your plan, it wasn't all that safe beforehand.

Lake Michigan is used as a place to dump many toxic materials, even though this negatively affects the lake's ecosystem and the people who use the lake. There are more laws about this now than before, and the lake is cleaner than it used to be, but it is still very dirty. Many industrial companies who have no place to dispose of the waste they create dump the waste in the lake, where it "disappears." It disappears for them, at least, since they don't have to care about it anymore. However, it still affects the lake, as well as everything that lives in and around the lake.

One of the main problems Lake Michigan faces is dumping of sewage. Not only is the material in sewage toxic and not good for anything that lives in the lake, it also fosters growth of harmful bacteria. This is why Chicago's beaches are sometimes closed. On especially hot days, bacteria growth becomes too great, and it becomes dangerous to swim in such dirty water.

PCB's. Now made worse by an oil spill, nice going BP.

Not disingenuous at all, and I never compared it to Horizon, how you got that stuff, I don't know. I heard it on a live report on ABC7 Chicago.

Get this, the gubmint is going to allow BP to police itself on this one too. Bad idea.

I could post some other BP misgivings, do you want me to start on how careless of a corporation they really are?

But BP, the nation’s biggest oil and gas producer, has a worse health, environment and safety record than many other major oil companies, according to Yulia Reuter, the head of the energy research team at RiskMetrics, a consulting group that assigns scores to companies based on their performance in various categories, including safety.

How ironic you bitching about an oil company given your signature. Try running your engine without oil.

I disagree. While the amount of poisonous fluid leaked was small, the very fact it did leak sends off alarms. This is a zero tolerance project and if their engineers cannot design their mechanisms to prevent small leaks, are we to see another round of BP blaming everyone except their own incompetence?

I make it a point to boycott companies and corporations who do not operate in our environment safely.

You do know BP's lackluster history of spills and accidents, don't you? Or, are you willing to overlook that small fact? As long as it's gas, you don't care how it was gotten.
