Rescuers Monday found six more bodies in a milewide swath of mud and debris that plunged from a Snohomish County hillside, as reports of those still missing jumped to 176.
So far, 14 people have been confirmed dead after the massive mudslide came down from above the North Fork of the Stillaguamish River, crossed over it, plowed through homes and onto Highway 530 about 11 a.m. Saturday.
Search conditions are dismal. Crews have at times been kept from the area out of fear more of the cliff above might crumble. And when they can look, “in areas it’s like quicksand. Sometimes it takes five minutes to walk 40 or 50 feet and get our equipment over these berms,” said Travis Hots, chief of Snohomish County Fire Districts 21 and 22.

Great image and map of the area impacted here...

Mind boggling the lack of media coverage on this.

Jesus. A 176. I can't even imagine how much pain some people must be going through.

Sad as it is, its a local story.

So let me see if I understand this. There is an earthquake in SF that kills 18 people and 176 people are missing. And that wouldn't be all over the national news?

We lose sight sometimes how deadly the history of weather is. This planet is a dangerous place to live.

There is plenty of media coverage of this.

What I find mind-boggling is that anyone would live at the foot of an obviously dangerous slide area.

The local government has some responsibility for what happened, they shouldn't have let people build homes there.

Yes, it's a local story and the same thing can and will happen again anywhere that local governments let people build homes where it's not safe for anyone to live.

This didn't have to happen.

How do you die from this then? Does a mile-wide mudslide just sneak up on you? If I wasn't at my car, I'm close enough that I can get to it and drive off at 5x that speed before dying.

Not if the road is blocked by a 1 square-mile area mudslide that's many feet deep.

They're still digging up dead people, no one knows what the final count will be.

I'll bet that none of those dead people build another house in that area, they've learned their lesson now.

One good thing about this catastrophe; anyone who is never found is well buried.

I made up that number.

Well I wouldn't be driving INTO the mudslide...

Take a look at the topography. Those folks didn't have a chance. The road was enveloped, as were the homes.

No doubt the families are comforted by that.
Sigh...

Guess I should move out of my home, it close to the beach. In Florida, oh the horror.

For a few days, then its gone. And if something else happens, maybe not even that long.
