    Tar sands oil is only viable when oil is > $100 a barrel. It is the most expensive oil on the planet.

    So in a contest between a drilling/transporting/refinement process that produces more environmental pollution and a drilling/transporting/refinement process that produces less, which one is preferrable?

    at some point, perhaps. Eventually solar will also become cheap, durable, and effective enough to be integrated into standard roofing material. Just not today or for a few years yet .
