A judge in southern Egypt has taken just two court sessions to sentence to death 529 supporters of Mohamed Morsi for the murder of a single police officer.
Sixteen people were acquitted after lawyers said they had not been allowed to present a proper defence before the judgment was made.
The defendants were arrested last August during a wave of unrest in which supporters of the former president react violently to the clearance of a pro-Morsi sit-in in Cairoduring which more than 900 people were killed. In addition to the murder, the 529 were accused of attempting to kill two other police officers and attacking a police station.

Sounds like a fair trial(s).

:doh

Egypt had its chance at democracy, the muslim brotherhood ****ed it up and now the Army is ****ing it up even more

Morsi supporters doesn't really tell it like it is......as Morsi's Supporters are the Muslim Brotherhood.

Do you think they got the verdict wrong?

529 people guilty of the murder of one police officer? Yes, I think they got it wrong.

The report I got was for multiple attacks.....it wasn't over the killing of one Police officer. It was for killing hundreds of people, and attacking the Police, also going after the Military. From looting to stealing government Property and Inciting riots. While I don't agree how they are not following judicial processes. Which that is all they really need to do.....this group is one of the major problems throughout the entire ME. Egypt is their main base and where their orders are passed out thru their Sunni Clerics. They get rid of the problem here.....then all their off shoots will begin to fail in the other ME Countries.....which will also put notice on any others. Anywhere else in the world. To run for cover. Is there reason to allow any of them to go back out into the world and then continue on pushing the sectarian divide and trying to use Democracy to take over other ME countries. Stirring up violence and lets not forget their treatment of women and others outside themselves.

Egypt sentences 529 Morsi supporters to death

The 545 defendants in the case were charged with murder, attempted murder and stealing government weapons in connection with an attack on a police station in August in the town of Matay in Minya province. One police officer was killed in the attack. The violence was part of rioting around the country sparked when security forces stormed two pro-Morsi sit-ins in Cairo, killing hundreds of people on Aug. 14.

A security official in the courtroom said the defendants and the lawyers disrupted the proceedings by chanting against the judge: "God is our only refuge!" He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the press.

On Tuesday, another mass trial against Morsi's supporters opens in a Minya court with 683 suspects facing similar charges. The defendants in that case include Brotherhood leader Mohammed Badie, who also faces multiple other trials, and senior members of the group from Minya province.

Since then, Morsi's Brotherhood and other Islamist supporters have staged near-daily demonstrations that usually descend into violent street confrontations with security forces.

The military-backed government has arrested some 16,000 people in the ensuing crackdown, including most of the Brotherhood leadership.

At the same time, militant bombings, suicide attacks and other assaults — mostly by an al-Qaida-inspired group — have increased, targeting police and military forces in retaliation for the crackdown. The authorities have blamed the Brotherhood for the violence, branding it a terrorist organization and confiscating its assets. The group has denied any links to the attacks and has denounced the violence.....snip~

It was a mass trial where 529 people were sentenced to death for the same murder. The defense was not allowed to present a case. Yes, they got it wrong. Picture 529 Christians in the United States given this sentence for the death of one police officer and then ask yourself the question again.

Read above.....it wasn't just for Killing one police Officer. It was for attacking all the police in one region and that town. Moreover much of the country is glad to see the MB gets its come-uppance. Especially women.

You read the above. Because you did it badly.

with an attack on a police station in August in the town of Matay in Minya province. One police officer was killed in the attack. The violence was part of rioting around the country sparked when security forces stormed two pro-Morsi sit-ins in Cairo, killing hundreds of people on Aug. 14.

The security forces killed hundreds of people. If the FBI killed hundreds of Tea Partiers you'd be rioting too, I expect. Morsi supporters rioted. Yes, they attacked a police station, killing one police officer. But the trial lasted five minutes and the defense was not allowed to present a case. How much do you want to bet some of those people never so much as threw a punch? I don't care if "much of the country" is glad to see the MB get hanged. There's no way this is something remotely resembling a fair trial.

Rights apply to everyone or they aren't rights. If these guys are so obviously guilty, convict them in a fair trial and be done with it.

I already stated I didn't care for how they played the Judicial Process.....but you surely can't read where it says they attacked other police. Also they attacked Coptic Christians and Burned downed churches all the while denying they, the MB did it.

Also, the Military responded due to Coptic Christians being beaten.....their Churches being Burned. All for the Pro Morsi support by the MB. They even attacked a military convoy. We even have some of the events up in the ME and Egypt/Africa. As to what the Morsi Supporters were doing and when the Egyptian military responded.

Yes, at least in some, or perhaps most of the cases. Being in the Islamic Brotherhood does not always equate to "terrorist" - though sometimes it cleary did. The Islamic Brotherhood was invited to participate in the elections (which they fairly won) as the "Islamic Brotherhood". Now, what 529 have been sentenced to death for financially supporting what was a legal political party that fairly won elections?

Of course, very few of these people, if any will actually be executed (and the Egyptian military government knows it). Rather, the threat of execution, however remote, will be used to intimidate them, to extort cash from them etc.

Mornin Cryptic. :2wave: While they did get to participate.....after the removal of Morsi. They went to town on the Coptics and then even the Egyptian Military. Which not mentioned was the police and their homes and family members.

Yep you are correct it is all for show.....even USA has it that bit up. The real story is to come today with the trial of the AL-JAZERRA journalists. One is an Australian.

More than 150 of 545 defendants stood trial on charges of killing a policeman and attacking police. The others were tried in absentia, the Associated Press reported.

"The trials are part of the raging battle between the military-led government and Muslim Brotherhood," said Fawaz Gerges, professor of international relations at the London School of Economics. "What these trials tell us is that the government has been systematically trying to weaken the Muslim Brotherhood and force them to accept the roadmap set by the military government."

Monday's ruling comes nearly nine months after the Muslim Brotherhood's Mohamed Morsi was ousted from the presidency . After millions took to the streets to protest against Morsi's presidency last June, Egypt's army chief Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Sisi forced Morsi aside and issued a political program that called for fresh parliamentary and presidential elections, which are expected to be held this year.

Brotherhood supporters, however, have continued some protests against the military-backed authorities, although the numbers in the streets have dwindled.

"What the trials say is that the military-led government has failed so far to basically force the Muslim Brothers to accept the status quo," Gerges said. "The trials really reflect the political stalemate that exists in Egypt."

Monday's verdict can be appealed. H.A. Hellyer, a nonresident fellow at the Brookings Institution, said he doubts the death sentence will be implemented.

"This is a first stage court," Hellyer said. "There are others for the defendants to appeal to." "But the issuing of the verdict in any case, even if it is almost certain to be overturned, is something to note when understanding what the legal system in Egypt is prepared to engage in when it comes to these types of cases," Hellyer said.....snip~

Which means they got the verdict wrong. It's a fair trial, or it's not. If it wasn't, the verdict is wrong.

I think the US needs to get rid of the democracy rhetoric and just come clean and state we are acting in our interests. We only support democracy when it's in our interests and turn a blind eye otherwise. It's was too inconsistent and this incident proves it.

Which means they got the verdict wrong. It's a fair trial, or it's not. If it wasn't, the verdict is wrong.

One piece says just 2 sessions......another says after 9 months. One side is Morsi supporters and MB attorneys the other side the Court. Then the Egyptian Military.

The MB didn't give the Coptic Christians or women any trials. They didn't even get to be arrested and held. They were just beaten and or killed. Some even burned out of their homes.

That was wrong too. But none seem to care about it so much.....since the MB said they were standing for Democracy. They weren't.....they were just using it to gain power.

Which means they got the verdict wrong. It's a fair trial, or it's not. If it wasn't, the verdict is wrong.

Well like I said.....I wasn't keen on how they went and or controlled Judicial process. But more importantly.....the verdict wasn't just for killing a single police man. It was a host of charges. There is also the part about stealing weapons.....in a country where the Citizen doesn't have that Right to have one.

What do you think would happen here in the US if the Citizens attacked a police station and taking it over. Plus clearing out all the weapons.

I don't think we'd have a 5 minute mass trial in which we convict everyone who happened to be on the street at the time and execute them all, that's for sure.

Yeah that's for sure.....our attorneys would have been filing paperwork from day one. Getting half of them bonded out. Those caught in the dead act would still make bond as long as they got the money. Our attorneys know how to use real democracy to get around the law. Bend it, break it, and use it against its ownself.

Good thing the Egyptian Military didn't just pick up everybody off the street. They went after the MB and those that aided them. The same ones they branded terrorists after the MB said they don't accept Morsi being removed from Office. Then continued on to incite Riots and attacks on whoever gets in the Mb's way.

When you abandon what you stand for in the face of terrorism, the terrorists win.

yea didn't have this issue under their old president. egypt was fairly stable so who was it that caused that mess over there? ol yea obama.
you have to realize that over in other countries you are guilty unless you prove yourself innocent.

when you have the number of rioters like they do over there you are not going to get fair trials. in fact it is the opposite of fair.
heck we can't even get fair trials in the US.

that is why when a movie star is busted for having crack or cocaine on them they get a slap on the wrist and rehab. the normal person goes to jail.

It was also for stealing weapons, inciting rioting, and stealing government property and like I said it all goes back to when Morsi was outed. They didn't even list the charges against the Copts. But the Copts did take to the streets and did fight back to protect certain Churches.

I don't care what terrorists think. I'm an American and I believe in due process and fair trials for all accused.

Oh well stealing government property that changes everything. Death to all who steal from the government!
