Venice votes for independence in unofficial poll

A self-organised “referendum” over the independence of one of Italy’s wealthiest regions has resulted in an overwhelming victory for the separatist camp, but authorities in Rome have largely ignored the result, amid scepticism over the regularity of the informal, non-binding poll.

Nevertheless, events in Veneto, the north-eastern region around Venice that is home to almost 5 million people, have attracted international attention, particularly from government-sponsored Russian media, keen to draw comparisons with the military-backed vote that sanctioned Moscow’s annexation of Crimea.

Out of 3.8 million eligible voters, 2.3 million took part in Veneto’s independence “plebiscite,” organisers said Friday, after six days of voting through makeshift polling booths, via phone or the internet. The pro-secession camp was declared the winner with over 89 percent, against just under 11 percent for the unionists.

I expect more of this in time. We already have Catalonia and Scotland moving for independence as well. Seems all it will take is a little push before Europe starts to break up under the weight of its economic malaise and intrusive governments.

There is always these movements during hard economic times, and they always fizzle out sooner or later.

Seems all it will take is a little push before Europe starts to break up under the weight of its economic malaise and intrusive governments.
LOL yea America's wet dream eh? Anything to keep your dominance of world affairs right?

Fact is you as and American should fear Venice especially if they attempt to reach their previous economic power and domination of known world politics. Not sure the regions around Venice would want that to happen again.

You are sarcastic about Venice becoming a world domination power today are you not?

Europe hell. Try running a similar "referendum" on the same that issue in Texas and many other Western and Midwestern states. America is not exactly united at the moment either. Quite a large number of us would like to be rid of Obama and the other Traitor Rats. Why? Because of economic malaise and intrusive government.

They were once before so why not? They has huge areas of Europe directly under control and even larger areas under their influence back in the day.

If you speak of 13-16 century Ottoman era then I think they were also highly distrusted. You could not cooperate with them and set out a united front against the Ottomans. They would backstab you with the first deal they stroke on their benefit from the Ottomans. This was part of the issue that we could not keep the front against the Ottoman Empire during the time of Skenderbeu the great.

Why would huge areas of Europe want to be under the direct control (or even influence type of control for that matter) from this tiny little city?

How many states other than Texas would want to be independent from the rest of the USA?

Stranger things have happened... But I bet that this previous glory is one of the main motivations by the nationalists.... it always is.
