Look at the blatant liberal media bias in this report on his death. There is no mention of his being a longtime Democratic politician and there is no mention of his being a crusading champion of civil rights who took on big government and big employers who were discriminating against blacks and finally there in no mention of his being honored for his civil rights work by the NAACP.

Nothing must get in the way of the leftist narrative. That's modern journalism. "Gay all the time. Everything has to be about gays. Gays trump blacks in the liberal universe."

Well, in America generally, not just the media, it's all about what have you done for me lately. Any good work he did in the 60's has been washed out by the creation of the Westboro Baptist Church, which hates gays about the same as the KKK hated the blacks he fought for. Moreover, if you look into his history, you see that as far back as 1977 he was not a good person:

A formal complaint was filed against Phelps on November 8, 1977, by the Kansas State Board of Law Examiners for his conduct during a lawsuit against a court reporter named Carolene Brady. Brady had failed to have a court transcript ready for Phelps on the day he asked for it; though it did not affect the outcome of the case for which Phelps had requested the transcript, Phelps still requested $22,000 in damages from her.[23][24] In the ensuing trial, Phelps called Brady to the stand, declared her a hostile witness, and then cross-examined her for nearly a week, during which he accused her of being a "slut", tried to introduce testimony from former boyfriends whom Phelps wanted to subpoena, and accused her of a variety of perverse sexual acts, ultimately reducing her to tears on the stand.[23][24] Phelps lost the case; according to the Kansas Supreme Court:

The trial became an exhibition of a personal vendetta by Phelps against Carolene Brady. His examination was replete with repetition, badgering, innuendo, belligerence, irrelevant and immaterial matter, evidencing only a desire to hurt and destroy the defendant. The jury verdict didn't stop the onslaught of Phelps. He was not satisfied with the hurt, pain, and damage he had visited on Carolene Brady.[23][24]

In an appeal, Phelps prepared affidavits swearing to the court that he had eight witnesses whose testimony would convince the court to rule in his favor. Brady, in turn, obtained sworn, signed affidavits from the eight people in question, all of whom said that Phelps had never contacted them and that they had no reason to testify against Brady. Phelps was found to have made "false statements in violation of DR 7–102(A)(5)".[23][24]

On July 20, 1979, Phelps was permanently disbarred from practicing law in the state of Kansas,[23][24] though he continued to practice in Federal courts.

In 1985, nine Federal judges filed a disciplinary complaint against Phelps and five of his children, alleging false accusations against the judges. In 1989, the complaint was settled; Phelps agreed to stop practicing law in Federal court permanently, and two of his children were suspended for periods of six months, and one year, respectively.

    Isn't value to one enough?

All I'm sayng is I think we can recognize that his death likely hurts someone. And maybe someone we'd also feel sorry for.

AUSTAN GOOLSBEE: I think the world vests too much power, certainly in the president, probably in Washington in general for its influence on the economy, because most all of the economy has nothing to do with the government.

Again, so what? Individual humans are meaningless in the scheme of things and even at larger scales, we don't mean a damn thing to the universe. We're only important to ourselves. If the whole species went away tomorrow, whatever other intelligent life there may be in the universe not only wouldn't know we'd vanished, they wouldn't care. We might be an archaeological curiosity, nothing more.
There is nothing demonstrably true that religion can provide the world that cannot be achieved more rationally through entirely secular means.

Your confusing news reporting with obituary writing. When someone dies then the reporting focuses on their whole lives, they report the details of birth, of early childhood, marriages, and events right up to the present.

When people are live and doing newsworthy things, then news reporting focuses on the newsworthy events and they don't have to give you a synopsis of the person's life. This model doesn't work for obituaries.

It's obvious why people disliked him, but if his actions were illegal he would have been in jail.

Phelps achieved his goal, he and 8 or 10 people were able to get millions of people to react to him. People gave Phelps his power by not ignoring him.

The huge irony in this discussion is that we have an audience on a discussion board which has developed a high sensitivity to sniffing out trolls and dismissing them as trolls and this audience has bought Phelps' trolling hook, line and sinker.

    Phelps is history's greatest troll.
