    Selfies from the Crimea

The Daily Mail is running an article chock full of happy people taking selfies standing next to the Russian troops.

    Here is one photo.

And here is the exit question. The Russian people living in Ukrainian Crimea feel greater allegiance to their Russian culture and to Russia than they do to their fellow countrymen, so what prevents a similar scenario (secession instead of annexation) from taking place in the Southwestern US?

How can someone sink so low to read the daily mail..........

China will have to be watched closely now. If Russia gets away with this, it will quite possibly take this as a precident to invade several Islands that it claims in the pacific.

This land grabbing way of making politics is really like the world is going backwards in history into 19th century style European imperialism.

The soldier is smiling as well; you can see it in his eyes.

Indeed. It's deterrence which keeps nations in check. Further, their interests must be enhanced by refraining from land grabs and once that condition is no longer met, and the deterrence effect is minimal, then we're off to the races.

There were very definite benefits to living in a Bi-Polar and Uni-Polar world system.

On a finer point, I'm not sure about how much voter fraud there was in the Crimean elections but I don't find it implausible that most of the ethnic Russians would prefer to be a part of Russia rather than stay with the Ukraine. If this election is not substantially fraudulent, then it points to a severe failure of the multicultural mode of cobbling together nations.

I'd be looking at Kurdistan emerging as a nation in some future time.

Doesn't a "selfie" imply that one is taking a picture of themselves?
You know the time is right to take control, we gotta take offense against the status quo

That's an excellent point. If I was Taiwan I'd be nervous as hell.
