KUALA LUMPUR Fri Mar 7, 2014 9:44pm EST

(Reuters) - A Malaysia Airlines flight carrying 227 passengers and 12 crew lost contact with air traffic controllers early on Saturday en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, the airline said in a statement.

"Malaysia Airlines is currently working with the authorities who have activated their search-and-rescue teams to locate the aircraft," it said.

Flight MH 370, operating a Boeing B777-200 aircraft departed Kuala Lumpur at 12.21 a.m. (1621 GMT Friday) and had been expected to land in the Chinese capital at 6.30 a.m. (2230 GMT) the same day.

The airline said the flight had lost contact with Malaysian air traffic controllers at 2.40 a.m., just over two hours into the flight.

China's CCTV said 160 Chinese nationals were onboard the flight, according to microblogging website Weibo.

Chinese state TV also reported there had not been any reports received yet about any aircraft crashed in Chinese waters.

State news agency Xinhua reported radar contact with the flight was lost while it was in Vietnamese airspace.

If the plane is found to have crashed, the loss would mark the second fatal accident involving a Boeing 777 in less than a year, after an unblemished safety record since the jet entered service in 1995.".."

This is just terrible. My thoughts are with the passengers, crew and their family members.

    Australia Media are reporting..

China's state media say Vietnamese authorities have detected signals from the missing Malaysia Airlines plane.

As well as the seven Australians, a spokesman for the airline said those on board included 153 from China, 38 from Malaysia, 12 from Indonesia, three from France, four from the US, two each from New Zealand, Ukraine and Canada, and one each from Russia, Italy, Taiwan, Netherlands and Austria.

That has been denied. No signal picked up from missing Malaysia Airlines plane-Vietnam official | Reuters

But, some interesting info on that particular plane:

The missing plane is believed to have been involved in a crash in August, 2012, when it damaged the tail of a China Eastern Airlines plane at Shanghai Pudong Airport, according to unconfirmed reports.
In the incident, the tip of the wing of the Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 broke off.

Seven Australians among 239 people feared dead after Malaysia Airlines plane goes missing

BTW, last Thursday, I was on a plane that had some nasty damage on it about 10 years ago, it was being worked on in the hangar, and up on jacks, the nose landing gear wasn't properly deployed when it was lowered, and the nose crashed into the ground, lot of work to fix when you think of the structural integrity, etc. Sometimes, knowing the planes by their numbers is not a good thing .

Seems to be conflicting information WRT the signal and whether it landed or not. Based on what I'm reading my guess is "not".

A 777 crashing enroute? Incredibly unusual. Particularly without thunderstorms in the area, it takes something pretty serious to down an airplane like that with no communication as to what's happening.

Re: Malaysia Airlines says Lost Contact with Plane carrying 239 people

I suspect its a terrorist attack or the Plane was hijacked and flown off and landed somewhere so it can be fitted with large explosives.

The transponder was disabled. Thats suppposed to be impossible.
