'(Reuters) - Crimea's parliament voted to join Russia on Thursday and its Moscow-backed government set a referendum within 10 days on the decision in a dramatic escalation of the crisis over the Ukrainian Black Sea peninsula.

The sudden acceleration of moves to bring Crimea, which has an ethnic Russian majority and has effectively been seized by Russian forces, formally under Moscow's rule came as European Union leaders gathered for an emergency summit to find ways to pressure Russia to back down.'

No giant shock to me...Crimea was always semi-autonomous, with more ethnic Russians then Ukrainians.

And with the Ukraine semi-falling apart and facing huge financial problems, were I a Crimean (especially a Russian one), I would want to join Russia ASAP.

Right! The West and EU brings protestors and snipers and the tentacles of the large Western Banks. The Russians bring low cost gas and loans collateralized by bonds and speak the same language and already have boots on the ground by previous agreement. What's wrong with this picture? Nothing! Best for all involved. The EU should ask Russia to take care of all of Ukraine.
 
Good thing, legitimises Russia's action, and though it won't, it should silence the crowd comparing Putin to Stalin, Hitler, etc.

This is not a surprise, or shouldn't be. Crimea was part of Russia until Kruschev gave it to Ukraine in the 1950s (thinking, of course, that the USSR was a permanent thing).

One guy that we didn't like all that much anyway draws an arbitrary line 60 years ago, and we're all up in arms over "territorial integrity."
 
It's not the first and won't be the last, I'm afraid. In the beginning there was Kosovo.
Now the domino effect could be expected. Too much crap in the world, fellas.

If George Bush or say Romney was in the White House and said it was cool, they wouldn't be up in arms about it. These people hate Obama, nothing more, and this is classic partisan hypocrisy.

And so is the US governments accusations that Putin is violating international law. There has to be some red faces!!

It seems the Right has contracted the "man crush" on Putin that Bush had when he "Saw into his soul". LOL They should get a room.
