U.S. Senate Republicans block veterans' health bill on budget worry

(Reuters) - U.S. Senate Republicans blocked legislation on Thursday that would have expanded federal healthcare and education programs for veterans, saying the $24 billion bill would bust the budget.

I'm glad we put veterans above all else.

AUSTAN GOOLSBEE: I think the world vests too much power, certainly in the president, probably in Washington in general for its influence on the economy, because most all of the economy has nothing to do with the government.

When do the benefit expansions come to an end for veterans? Yes thank you for serving our country, now please allow us all to place you upon an alter above mere mortals.

Not sure they ever should end. These were received largely doing our work, and not just on their own.

Never end? So you just support endless entitlements. Enlisted today make greAt money, have educational/ training options, endless praise from the public, etc. And now you want blank checks given to them.

Promise me you'll never be in charge of a budget.

Damn right. Some died. Others have life long problems, and in this case, for an unnecessary war. We can step up and care for them. Put some substance to the platitude that support the troops.

How dare those vets who have been injured fighting for our country feel entitled to have their wounds treated for free!!

Rep. Ryan/Sen. Murray put out a budget this past December.
A decrease in the increase of COLA was included, about a $6 billion saving.
The affected groups of DEMs and GOPs went ape-****.
    Both parties blamed the other.
Neither party knows what to do with defense.

As my GOP Rep. said today, nearly 1/2 of defense is for bennies.
Yet the POTUSA got burned once before putting out chained CPI of SS, with GOPs stabbing him.
He didn't put that out there this time .

The troops are already supported without us conjuring up new benefits. You realize that many of these benefits are for life right? Give five years of service for A LIFETIME OF BENEFITS? Yeah, methinks you don't manage your household's finances.

Unnecessary war? Are you referring to Iraq?

Since I've been there with a Vet from 1974 until he died 2012, I've got all the stories.
It was very intense getting him care when Iraq was going full-steam last decade at Hines VA near Maywood, IL.
We could have paid more than the 1/5 of his VA Home costs when he went in for good in 2008.
Just as we can handle chained CPI of Mom's SS as well as more of her assisted living now.
It must be means-tested, but we're too incompetent as a Nation to do that .

I don't know that the bill created any new benefits. If you do, could you explain what those new benefits are?
