Obama warns US will 'isolate' Russia if Putin doesn't pull back in Ukraine

Obama threatens to

Maybe I'm wrong, but I think the time for warnings is over. The article says they are considering what steps to take. Why don't they already KNOW what steps to take? Why are no contingency plans for this in place already? If our intelligence didn't see this coming? Why not?

I blame our intelligence community. We spend billions of dollars to get a heads up on this type action. What happened?

From what Pentagon officials have said Nato military options are few and far between.

Hello Lord T.
Thanks for the info.
I'm sure Ukraine will have no problem getting loans from the IMF.

Since the GOPs are playing into Putin's hands ONCE AGAIN, time to isolate their partner Putin.

Sorry, but when GOPs filibuster a bill to help Iraqi Veterans after sending them there in the first place,
Obama needs to realize he's on his own once and for all .
Russia does not need the IMF, Ukraine does. Russia was offering Ukraine money instead of them having to go to the IMF for a loan

Russia's economic situation isn't very good, and since it's 60 billion in losses on it's markets and only a half trillion in central bank back up, economic sanctions could really hurt Russia. However, Russia is the lynch pin to solving the Syrian crisis and a major player in Iran nuke negotiations. The question is, does the US and EU want to throw both of those ME issues out the window and burn any bridges leading to Moscow over the Ukraine?

Please keep us the **** out of this, Mr. President.

Sincerely,

Everyone

I believe you're right on target. We have a president that hates America, opposes American exceptionalism and believes that all the bad things that have happened in the past 100+/- years are the fault of The United States.
Some people actually believe this. Humorous yet depressing at the same time.

The events were that have occured were theorized as going to take place.

The change in government has been pushed by the US, and the EU.

That Russia would react negatively to said change in government was expected, which is why it was pushed to occur during the olympics, just as Georgia attacked South Ossetia around the Biejing Olympics (a hope that the Olympics would stop Russia from taking the actions it has

Every rational analyst would have projected that Russia would never accept losing the bases in Crimea, and would have used force to keep them.

The coup was I expect a suprise, and that gave Russia the abilty to use the illegitamate government (non elected government), which is tied with very right wing elements as an excuse to move troops into Crimea in order to protects its bases, and the people there from elements hostile to Russia and ethnic Russians

Check out Right Sector for the Right Wing Elements ( Ukrainian group).

During the Olympics it should have been clear as to what Russias response was going to be, if the government in the Ukraine was changed.

Now realistically

Given that the Russian response should have been predicted fairly easily, the end result may have been part of the plan. Or policy makers may have been hoping for the best and that Russia would have done nothing. A bad bet

After listening to McCain, Graham, Bolton and Rogers just today, I hear the same war drums as I did during Iraq.
I also heard a few words from GWB in 2001 extolling the virtues of Putin.
How do you view the constant GOP criticism of Obama DURING a crisis and its effect on Putin .
Please keep us the **** out of this, Mr. President.

No everyone. I do not want to a nuclear arms race by second tier countries. I don't care really about the Crimea. I do care that it now is impossible to make any nuclear disarmaments treaty/agreement or non-proliferation treaty with any country as they are now known to be nothing but trickery by the major world powers.

From what Pentagon officials have said Nato military options are few and far between.

NATO is nothing but an excuse to do nothing. It is a defense negative. A joke. It would be far better to tell every NATO country "defend yourself" and we'd decide if anything happened if wished to involve. This would force them to built up far more than now.

Why do we defend Germany? That's nuts. They are the richest country in Europe. Spend their own money. Develop their own military. They don't back us up on anything anyway.

We believe it, because the evidence exists.

Only in your own mind. But I digress...

While I firmly believe Putin has overstepped his bounds, I have to ask those who are insisting that the Obama Administration take stronger action beyond imposing sanctions against Russia, what exactly do you think should be done?

And let's remember this: Other than Granada, Reagan never fired a shot at any other country, not even a single bullet in Russia's direction throughout the Cold War era. He got others to do it albeit very underhandedly (i.e., Iran/Contra...stinger missles smuggled into Pakistan so that the Afghan rebels could fight a more definitive war against their Russian invaders). Clinton eventually decided to take military action against the Kurds in Kosovo, but only with unilateral support. The only time Bush I led an attack against another country during his Presidency was when the Kuwuiti Prince asked for his help directly. And we all know what a mess GWB made with his pre-emptive strike against Iraq.

So, I ask you folks, what exactly is Pres. Obama to do at this point considering that not one shot has been fired from a Russian gun aimed at a Ukrania citizen or its military? I get that Putin is taking similar actions as Hilter did when he invaded Poland and its citizens gave up without a fight. It's history somewhat repeating itself here. But again, other than marshalling international support and isolating Russia still further, what other action would you suggest be taken at this point?

Yep, and ask any number of Latin American countries what they think of the IMF.

From what Pentagon officials have said Nato military options are few and far between.

Yeah, I wouldn't think the Pentagon would be real excited about taking on the Russians.

If they're pushing intervention, they should be ignored. This one is on the EU to fix.

The rational ones don't.

Any action we take will blow back on us like almost every other time we get involved in this sort of ****.

Put plainly, we need to skip the bar fight and fix the ****ing roof.

You may have a good point with that, it would also legitimise Iran to seek a nuclear weapons program.

1.Perhaps they are too busy spying on Americans to worry Russia and the Ukraine.
2.Any action against Russia will not have Europe's support because they need Russia's oil.
3.Russia can interpret any action on our part as a act of war, much the say way the Japanese did when we cut them off in WWII.

The World has plenty of sources of oil and gas.
A little rationing to get by blockading of ALL Russian goods wouldn't hut the World.
But it would hurt Russia, deeply.
And the G-7 could reform in June .

We'll see. It all takes time to divert oil and gas destined to someplace else. Then there is the cost factor as oil prices rise. I doubt if europe will push it too far, especially if Russia threatens to cut off the oil and gas.

My concern is that Putin does not ignore the many splintered GOP groups, hammering the POTUS daily in public.
Rep. Rogers wants to throw Russia out of the G-8.
Merkel said she wasn't too keen on this idea.
My point is that the USA does not speak with a unified voice.
If they're pushing intervention, they should be ignored. This one is on the EU to fix.
As for the EU to fix, the USA lost countless thousands of merchant seamen before we actually joined WW2.

Russian stock markets down 10% today, losing 58 billion dollars in value..
This from FOX Baier and Hume on right now who I like .

I encourage Russia to take your advice.
Once you lose a customer, it's tough getting them back.
And, how's he gonna pay for Sochi?
And he's now probably lost the G-8 summit in Sochi.
When the IMF cuts off funds, we'll see how bellicose Putin is .

Russia I would say isn't all that worried about Sochi or the lost of the summit. I think you put too much faith into the IMF. Sanctions rarely work especially if one is a tough dictator who is willing to put his countries people through heck. Look at Iran, sanctions hasn't done a thing there. North Korea, Cuba, etc. It all sounds good, but a tough leader, sanctions means little.

But we shall see. I am not an expert on Russia or that part of the world. I do know the Ukraine has a long history of being part of Russia and just became a country in 1991. This is Russia's back yard.

:agree: It's Winter over there, too, and it's cold! This is not Sochi, where they had to manufacture snow for the Olympic games. Palm trees grow on the streets of Sochi!

Greetings, Pero. :2wave:
