Gay hair stylist drops New Mexico governor as client because she opposes same-sex marriage* - NY Daily News

Soooo, here it is, the other side of the coin. For all of you who cheered the veto of the Arizona protection of religion bill, we now have the flip side. Governor Martinez' hairdresser refuses to do business with her any more because of her views on gay marriage. Anyone want to try to defend this bigotry? After all the claims of Equality, it seems that equality really ISN'T the point after all.

Personally, I'd sue his panties off just to make a point.

Re: The Other Side of the Coin

Sue him if he wants to be treated equelly and fairly by people who are against his lifestyle, he should then treat those with a lifestyle or opinion he is against equally as the children in the USA say the golden rule? I'm gay and I think this guy is an idiot and he is one of the many reasons that kind of slow down progress in the LGBT community

I agree. I'm a Christian business owner who has no problem doing business with gay people... except for one, but not because she is gay but is an unreasonable bitch.

You're forgetting that gay rights is THE hot issue right now and in this country, under those circumstances, a homosexual can do no wrong so this is something that needs to be celebrated and the hair dresser needs to get plenty of face time on the networks and cable news to spread the word.

Your comments would lead one to believe that America is a nation that is based on laws when the fact of the matter is that we are more and more a nation reliant upon popular opinion and media frenzy.

Re: The Other Side of the Coin

Sure is quiet in here. What, no accusations of bigotry? Nothing?

83 reads at the time of this posting. I think the silence says more about many of you than the comments you made in the other thread.

Re: The Other Side of the Coin

Sure. I think private businesses should be able to decide whom to do business with according to whatever grounds they see fit.

The point being, what he's doing is illegal.

Re: The Other Side of the Coin

Well it's not the same they are always picked on and made to feel ridiculous because they are always picked on for being ridiculous. It's not easy being a homosexual hypocrite because they don't really exist only the haters say they exist, so there!

Re: The Other Side of the Coin

I'm looking forward to seeing what AgentJ has to say. It will be interesting to see if he is "factually correct". He is, after all a master debater in his own mind.

Why would I, as a Progressive, feel any differently about this hair dresser turning someone away for their views then I do about a gay customer being turned away for their sexual orientation? Wouldn't that be inconsistent? The principal here is that we practice acceptance, tolerance and understanding. If a gay person behaves that way they are just as responsible.

BTW, this individual (hairdresser) does not represent the behavior or choices of the entire LGBT community. So unless they get backing from the community as a whole. You really have no point.

You have Hilary as a customer? wow. I wouldn't serve her either.

Re: The Other Side of the Coin

I do business with people I don't like every day. That's business. A salon is a business and should be managed like one.

Re: The Other Side of the Coin

My stance is the same in both case. Who wants to get a haircut, or a cake from someone who doesn't like you?

This governor is actively persecuting this particular man by preventing him from marrying the person he loves. He has no obligation to "tolerate" that kind of assault on his liberty. Would you accuse a black barbershop of "bigotry" for refusing to cut George Wallace's hair? Discriminating against homosexuals is wrong because its based on irrational prejudice, this man has very valid reasons to refuse to serve his oppressor.

He has done business with her in the past. Did he not know her opinion on gay marriage then? I agree you shouldn't have to do business with people you do not want to. Keep in mind that this is the context of the Arizona bill where the gay community was all up in arms about. They did not think it was fair for a business to refuse service based on personal beliefs, which is exactly what is happening here.

Wouldn't it also be a great time to cut her hair and discuss the issue with her? The guy has her as a captive audience for far longer than the average citizen and he throws the opportunity away. What an idiot.

Sue him for what?

Under Arizona law politician is not one of the protected classes listed in their Public Accommodation laws. BTW - "Sexual Orientation" is also not one of the classes of persons listed either under Arizona Employment Law or Public Accommodation laws. It's perfectly legal to fire somone for being gay or to refuse them service.

The point being, what he's doing is illegal.
What he did is both illegal and wrong.

No it's not. Politician is not protected under Arizona law. It might be "wrong" (that is opinion), but it's not illegal.

She's being discriminated against, because of her sexuality.

I completely agree and passionately support equality for everyone. My feelings on this issue are that you best serve it when you practice what you preach. So one should try to live it themselves. Even when it is profoundly difficult. Otherwise aren't you just trading places with them? (turning THEM away because of YOUR personal beliefs)

Discriminating against homosexuals based on irrational prejudice hurts innocent people. Discriminating against jackass politicians who openly want to persecute you is entirely reasonable. Not all "personal beliefs" are morally equivalent.

No, it doesn't. Denying someone service or employment doesn't cause them any harm.

The liberal idea that "all opinions are equally valid" is nonsense. The people against homosexuality cannot provide any evidence of why it is objectively harmful. By contrast, I can provide tangible examples of the harm caused by people discriminating against homosexuals. My arguments based on facts and logic do in fact trump irrational blind prejudice.

Why on earth does this make you think equality isn't the goal? Instead of jumping to the conclusion that us liberals were just speechless from your perfect debate, you should consider the possibility that there were few replies because your thread is stupid with a nonsensical premise.
