I agree except that some are actually nice guys. Obviously I would except those involved in rape or any other crime. Every time my wife hears something on the news about Aaron Hernandez she shakes her head and says "what a waste. He had it all. Now he has nothing." I suppose becoming millionaires in their early 20's is a difficult thing to which to adjust. Sadly, I can't answer that from personal experience.

I hate to say it, being a Pats fan and all, but I think that Aaron Hernandez might have ALWAYS been a thug. He is a suspect in a double homicide in another state as well (can't remember which state). I've also heard that a lot of his teammates on the Patriots did not really like him all that much as a person. He was a real arrogant prick I've heard.

Yes, I doubt he learned crime after becoming an NFL player. I guess one could say that the NFL is a cross section of American men in terms of behavior. The only things they share in common are athletic skill and wealth.

Exactly right. I mean, Tom Brady was really young too, and he didn't turn to the "thug life." I think a lot of these guys come from the ghetto and are in gangs anyway. I'm pretty sure that AH had some gang ties too. He would make gang signs on the field sometimes (something that earned him some complaints as a Pats player, which he was warned about apparently).

A lot of stuff has come out about him since his arrest. I imagine we'll learn a lot more during the actual trial.

You also must have heard about Aaron's most recent incident where he beat the crap out of a fellow inmate in jail? Wonder if he's doing favors now too?

I wouldn't blame it on the ghetto. Most of these guys got a college education or at least attended college. That should cure some ills. I once had an employee, a black woman, who was born and raised in Cabrini Green - a notorious crime ridden housing project in Chicago. With no help from anyone else, she got herself educated and finally earned a degree in mechanical engineering. She had the opposite of a silver spoon as a child and still made something commendable of herself. She is a fine person and I am her son's godfather. One would never guess anything about her childhood after meeting her.

I like your post, but I don't agree completely. Just because a person is in college doesn't mean anything. Most NFL stars go to college on a sports scholarship.

A little more about AH alleged gang affiliations.

There are lots of pro athletes with alleged gang ties, whether that be currently or in the past I can't say of course. It's interesting how the gang culture keeps hold of them even after they've been successful at their sport and have the means to escape such a life.

Yep, mentioning Nagin probably won't help him much.

Football and basketball have been taken over by thugs.Just a matter of time until some gang violence breaks out on the field or on the court.

You have no idea what you're talking about.

Has anyone produced one scintilla of non-anecdotal evidence that pro athletes are, per capita, more or less violent than society as a whole?

I would think it's safe to assume these pro ball thugs are more violent than your average IBM employee yes.
