Obama Launches ‘My Brother’s Keeper’ to Help young Minority Men.....

If the problem is having too much money lying around, then it solves the problem, otherwise, no.

But, if successful people can say, "Look, I was in your position once, and I still succeeded. If I can do it, so can you," then that could save a few of them.
Unless, of course, they listen to the failures saying, "The deck is stacked against you kid. Give up. You can make money selling weed or something."

The problem is, that we don't have "too much money laying around".....And spending like this on any level is just IMHO, just another form of cheap vote buying, and false hope for people that really need more.

As long as he is serious about using private donations to fund it, he can spend all he wants as far as I'm concerned. If the plan is to use tax dollars, then it's time to say, "enough. We already have enough government programs."

Speaking of privately funded programs for youth, I just came back from a dinner honoring volunteers in one that has been successful for decades. It's called the "Boy Scouts of America," and is one of the best organizations I know of in the project of teaching boys to be men. That one I'll support, both with money and time.

agreed, but I don't trust this liar as far as I can throw him.

"Boy Scouts of America believes that no member can grow into the best kind of citizen without recognizing an obligation to God."

History of the Boy Scouts of America - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

One wonders how that would fair in today's 'anti religion' society.

They seem to be doing fine. I'd be willing to bet that they have more members than Obama's "Brother's Keeper" will ever have. The membership did drop off a bit after gays were admitted to the ranks of scouts, which is kind of sad.

I think calling today's society "anti religion" is a bit of s stretch given the numbers of churches there are in every town in America.

Lots of hypocrites attend church....Doesn't make them religious.

If the country were really "anti religious", then the hypocrites would quit attending church. Why make a show of being religious unless it gives then some advantage?

Hypocrites, like the poor, we have with us always.

What people do in public, and say in private are two different things often...Are you calling the poor "hypocrites"? Why? But you are correct, there will always be poor people for a myriad of reasons, some as simple as they are horrible with money.

No, I'm paraphrasing a verse from the Bible about how we will always have poor. The point is, our society is a long way from being "anti religion." Our freedom of religion is one of the greatest accomplishments of this nation.

Agreed, but that great foundation is today being confused with a supposed "freedom from religion" ...

I'm not sure just what that phrase really means. We have the freedom to practice any religion we choose to, or to practice none at all. If we choose to practice none at all, is that what is meant by "freedom from religion?"

:doh are you kidding here? You've never heard what the freedom from religion folks want in this society? My goodness, there is even a foundation with the name....

Oh, so it's an organization of atheists.
If someone wants to be an atheist, they have the right to do so, don't they? I really don't see where that organization is tantamount to America being anti religion.

There are at least a dozen churches in this small town, including Catholic, Protestant, Mormon, and Sikh ones. There is not one single atheist organization among them.

That is quite true for today but it certainly is 'a work in progress', and one that is having some effect on the culture. There is a serious rewrite of history on the website, not out of the ordinary with any start-up fringe group.

If the work in progress means that we're headed toward a society that is anti religion, we have a very long way to go before we have one.

Things can often change quicker than we might think...However, one thing that has always got me concerning this is that we hear a never ending choirs when liberals want to scream that there is a separation between church and state, only not when they want to assault the church...I understand that hypocrisy is a sport in politics, but come on man.....

Let's hope this program does more for young men than Obama does for his own brother.

That's a pretty broad generalization, it seems to me. "Liberals" want to assault the church? Let's define "liberal" and see what examples there might be of them "assaulting the church."

Oh so now we must define modern liberalism? Talk about moving goalposts. You're trying to shift stadium's.

It is not possible to have a rational discussion about "liberalism" or many other political philosophies without first defining your terms. To all too many self described conservatives, "liberal" just means "anyone who disagrees with my point of view."

"Conservative" is yet another term that has different meanings to different people.

Is Jimmy Carter a "liberal"?

How long have you known me ditto? And you don't know? Nonsense.

Lets call them progressives of either party.

Hell yes

I don't know. I thought "liberal" to you was synonymous with "statist", the philosophy that big government is the solution to problems. What that has to do with attacking "the church" I have no idea. Which church are we talking ab out here, Catholic, Baptist, Protestant in general, Jewish, what? When you post "when liberals want to scream that there is a separation between church and state, only not when they want to assault the church." makes me wonder just what you do mean.
