Pa. couple face prison after sons' prayer deaths

If I fall in to a lake and you don't help me, you didn't kill me.

I sure as hell didn't do the right thing and try to prevent your death just as these parents didn't try to prevent their childrens death.

With your logic, If you fall into a lake and I stand by offering no help to you. and just watch you drown, you've died of natural causes.

a better analogy would be that instead of calling for the assistance of first responders, you instead offered the inadequate help of an extended arm, attempting to grasp the victim. such help, tho well intended, was inadequate for the needs of the victim

Yeah but it all comes back to religious freedom and to whether the government really needs to be a nanny state (literally) taking care of our children.

There's a role for government, and there's a role for parents. Unfortunately not all parents are spectacular. Same can be said for governments. I still don't like mixing the roles.

OK. But then you used 2 unrelated examples.

Even that's not quite right.

It would be like refusing to feed your child under the assumption that God will feed him. Then, when the child starves to death, you call it "death through natural causes."

Are we in the business of legislating people to do the right thing?

If you're being assaulted in an alley and someone walks by, they have no legal obligation to help you or to call the authorities. Is it the right thing to do? Yes, but it's not a legal obligation.

It's clearly a cult and a scam, I don't see how it was allowed to be defined as a "religion".

My Wife and I were commenting just last evening about the new commercials they're running during primetime. We were under the assumption one needed to be 'special' [or wealthy] to be part of their circus.

Beyond disgusting. These whackos should be condemned. People do not have the "right" to endanger others with their beliefs, regardless of whether it is their own children.

They are no different than the bat **** crazy religious extremists over in the Middle East who make poor decisions that encourage and manipulate their children to participate in activites that they know will see them end up dead.

Exactly. That kind of 'thinking' is when enables some people to justify flying planes into buildings.

Fine, then Muslims and Jews should stop mutilating their children with circumcision, amirite?

Would you make that illegal for athiests too? How about pierced ears?

We have to remain a little reasonable here and not jump into the extremist category to carry on a reasonable discussion.

I wouldn't do any of those things. I'm arguing in favor of religious freedom.

I was responding to Serenity who said the parents should be "condemned" and that parents do not have the right to endanger others with their beliefs.

Well if she really believes that, then why is it OK for Jewish parents to cut of part of their kid's penis?

I think it's a case of her not agreeing with this couple's particular religion, so that makes it OK to point the finger. I'm just calling out the inconsistency.

but they have the religious freedom to believe that prayer heals
and their religious beliefs direct them to prayer for healing instead of medicine
why do your beliefs trump theirs?

Yes, they have the religious freedom to believe that prayer heals, just like they have the religious freedom to believe that if they plunge a knife into a random stranger's heart, it won't kill them. That doesn't mean they have the right to act on those beliefs.

Why are you directing that comment towards me? I don't have a penis, i'm not a Jewish parent and i've never spoken out in support of circumcision.

What inconsistency are you referring to? I've made one post prior to this in the thread and i couldn't be more clearer.

You might want to take your fascination and desire to rant about Penis's elsewhere.

You need to be wealthy to get higher up in the church, you essentially buy your levels of whatever BS they came up with. There are 2 types of Scientologist, idiots and scammers.
