Fraternity expels 3 linked to statue noose, suspends Ole Miss chapter

that's idiotic. intent is what counts.

Yes, intent counts

SO the question is, did he accidently slip while carrying a noose and he lost his grip on it and it just happened to, accidently, fall around the statue's neck where he couldn't reach it to remove it?

Or maybe he meant to put a tie around the statue but when he reached into his closet he accidently pulled out a noose?

Or maybe, just maybe, he knew the symbolic meaning behind the noose and the effect of hanging it around that particular statue's neck?

What do you think?

It wasn't a crime but it was no joke, either. Not enough time's passed yet.

If I'd considered it a joke, I wouldn't have stated that those involved should have been instantly expelled.

Anybody want to bet that the Ole Miss Sigma Phi Epsilon chapter had zero members of colour?

You lose. They have more members of color than the Obama Campaign

Prove it. Simply provide a definition of racism.

Man, how did I know this was gonna happen? One makes the slightest allegation of racism, and butthurt white people pour out of the woodwork. It's like barely touching a fire ant bed and watching the fire ants swarm anything and anyone within a five-foot radius.

How could anyone expect white Liberals to come swoopin' in claiming that all white people--except them, of course--are racist.

Oh, and black folks are too weak minded to deal with it, unlike white folks.

Man oh man oh man. There are fewer things in life more reliable than the emotional fragility of white people when their white privilege is called out. Apsdt, you think I'm black?! LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL, learn to read.

For the few of you who are actually willing and able to do this thing called LISTEN, here is a nice summary of what it means to be a white person (and a straight male one at that). Dear racism deniers: It is physically impossible for you to raise any objections that that author did not address in his follow-up threads. But some of you will try. And, like the butthurt commentors, you too will fail miserably.

I think I'm just gonna sit back for the next round of posts and munch on popcorn. This ought to be quite entertaining.

I know you're not black. Thus your rage is senseless, because you dont have the first damn clue what black folks are thinking.

I have to admire your rock-solid commitment to refusing to address actual arguments.

I guess it was, "Was it a racist joke? Oh hell yes." that threw me off.
I'm not sure I'd expel the guys. There might be some kind of penance that could be dreamed up for them.

Sorry YOU lose - the photo is from the SigEp chapter at University of SOUTHERN Mississippi - NOT from the University of Mississippi

Sigma Phi Epsilon - MS Gamma

How would you know how many people of colour work in the Obama campaign group?

Well, it was a good try to validate your claim. Why don't you try now?

According to ABCNews, the last lynching in Mississippi happened 40 years ago.

Would you agree that calling in the feds to consider hate crime legislation with a minimum requirement of five years in a federal prison is a bit over the top for an act of utter stupidity that otherwise broke no laws?

The act itself isn't 'racist' to me - could be a ****ty joke. Our country has certainly made it permissible to make race-related jokes. Many comedians thrive on this (Key and Peele, Tosh.0 - etc).

What would make it racist is the intent, the overall behavior or attitude of these individuals. If they were in fact doing it for racially charged, hate fueled reasons VS they thought it would just be dumb and funny.

There is nothing remotely funny about draping a noose around the statute of a man who single-handedly ended segregation at the University of Mississippi and who had more courage in one fingernail that these inbred cretins could ever imagine. They should be kicked out of the University, never mind the fraternity.

That's the one:

400 vs three - I wonder why the harsh reaction this time around?

With apologies to Pete Townsend:

"Meet the New South...dah dah...dah dah
Same as the Old South...dah dah...dah dah"

Why is it an act of stupidity, and not an act of racism?

Yes. It should be dealt with in-house. Some variety of community service, maybe, but not expulsion.
That would teach them the wrong lesson.

A white guy hanging a noose around the neck of James Meredith doesn't look like racism to you?

Nothing looks like racism to the Far Right. Nothing. Real lynchings wouldn't look like racism to these guys.

Why is it an act of stupidity, and not an act of racism?

It clearly was an act of racism... I've already said it was a racist joke by a bunch of idiot frat boys that should be expelled for what they did, but do not deserve five years in a federal prison. Why is that so hard to understand that I've had to repeat it, like three times?

Three 19 yr old frat boys being stupid. Stop the presses.

The kids are in deep doo-doo now, though, because there apparently isn't any law against propping items against a statue if the statue isn't actually damaged. So the FBI has been called in to see if it can be charged as a hate crime.

Sorry, the worst these kids should have had was instant expulsion from the university. Was it a racist joke? Oh hell yes. Should they spend five years in the slammer for it? Of course not. This is one of those face-palm moments, when officials have perpetrators, but can't find any law they have broken, so they call in the feds to fabricate one. :doh

I'd be perfectly happy with expulsion. If they went to jail, they'd better hope they aren't mixed in with black inmates.

then simply call it an act of racism, and leave the far less pejorative term of stupidity out of it. These racists knew exactly what they were doing.

Eh, you're more lenient than I. There was an obvious racist component to their "prank", so even though no laws were broken, it ratchets things up a bit. I wouldn't pitch a fit if they aren't expelled, however, but they deserve a serious slap on the ass and since no laws were broken, getting expelled even for a semester should bring the lesson home. :)

Neither do you.
