Fraternity expels 3 linked to statue noose, suspends Ole Miss chapter

Do you always argue against what you made up?

So, I "made up" your post?

Just a note....In reading this thread, I find it simply amazing that in this thread where the perpetrators are are described as from a fraternity that touts its "diversity, and support of equal rights", so immediately the conversation starting out was one of how the leftist members didn't think it was meant to be a "racist action" or that it was just "a joke in bad taste".....Where as the same OP starter in another thread takes a mention of militia in a plot, and immediately the perps are "RIGHT WING!!!!!"
How easily some are just plain duped.
Where did a "leftist" member of this forum argue that this case wasn't a racist action or that it was "just a joke"?
So now, "Moderate" is the same as "Leftist" in your mind?
Do you always argue against what you made up?
post #3 Aunt Spiker, Lean: Moderate
The act itself isn't 'racist' to me - could be a ****ty joke.
Oh for God's sake. A kid prank. Yeah, it's a racist prank.

Even better, "Very Conservative" is to be seen as the same as "Leftist"?
Exactly. They were trolling and it blew up in their faces.

Good on the fraternity for saving face, I guess. However, I don't think that racism was the primary motivation.

clownboy is a "Leftist"?
Oh BS. Climb down off the horse. It's actually part of the culture of some campuses to mess with the statuary in ever more creative ways. My own freshman class placed a 5 foot paper mache penis on the statue of the university's founder.

There isn't a culture on earth that has no racism. The key is in how it's dealt with. What more do you require than what has happenned to address the incident? You looking for the death penalty or something?

Three students' careers and lives have been permanently impacted because they carried out what could very well have been a stupid college prank. A fraternity that has openned itself up to all races has lost it's charter. Massive over reaction fueled by the guilty minds of a bunch of white liberals.

Like I wrote earlier, "Where did a "leftist" member of this forum argue that this case wasn't a racist action or that it was "just a joke"?"

No, I agree with postings you cherrypicked...I was speaking of how the known leftists responded early in the thread when they realized that they couldn't blame this on some right wing frat...but you know that, you're just being dishonest.

I was speaking of how the known leftists responded early in the thread when they realized that they couldn't blame this on some right wing frat

And you said leftists responded by calling this a prank.

Problem is, no leftist called it a prank. Only the moderates and the conservatives.

I disagree. Tosh.0 and Key and Peele aren't comedians. ;) Agree on your other points.

a professional entertainer who amuses by relating anecdotes, acting out comical situations, engaging in humorous repartee, etc.

- It's very simple.
- You just don't like them.

Yeah, and there's nothing humorous about making people wet themselves either, but I've still celophaned a few toilets and hooked a couple batteries to urinals in my past. Humor is subjective, and drunken frat humor even more so. Tasteless humor is a staple in modern society. Again, Jackass movies sell out at the box office, including the insipid Bad Grandpa. Remember when Borat was all the rage? How sick and sad was that? Was Ted Danson pulling a "racially motivated prank" when he went in blackface?

I'm glad they were caught and glad they were punished by school and fraternity code. I think it's silly to make a federal case out of it. Certainly there are cases of real and harmful racism folks can center their rage upon. The students pulled a stupid prank that turned the frat and the school against them.

Borat poking fun at his own Arab culture or Muslim religious customs only offends Arabs and Muslims. Others can laugh about it, but such attempts at humor aren't meant to offend or insight fear and anxiety in people. Ted Danson going public in blackface may have offended some people, but it certainly didn't insight fear in Blacks. It might've mad a few people mad, but no one was in fear of what they saw. I'll go a step further on in the defense of humorous acts.

Lisa Lampenali or John Tosh's brand of humor may be harsh, but here's the catch: most of it is steeped in racial sterotypes across various cultures AND is applied equally among the various races. Neither comedian necessarily singles out a particular racial, cultural or religious group except when it comes to poking fun at those cultural stereotypes we all are keenly aware of. John Tosh in particular mainly pokes fun at people who flat out does stupid things. Sometimes both comedians do hit below the belt, but when I see a Black man/woman, a White man/woman, a Hispanic man/woman, a Jew or Muslim laughing their butts off at a joke that was directed NOT at them personally and not meant as a put down to their race, gender, religion or culture but simply as an aknowledgement that "Yeah, we do do that", then I'm fine with the joke because they're fine with it. We all can laugh about it with the knowledge that we all came away with the same cultural understanding of each other.

So, I get that sometimes you just have to laugh about it, but this placing a noose around the neck of a Black historical monument isn't funny. As a Black man, I would never find something like that funny any more than I've find humor in placing a noose around the neck of a status of Thomas Jefferson (for the clear connotation of him being a n-lover). It's offensive to me regardless moreso for the psychological impact such an act carries with it.

It's not funny. No matter how hard yourself and others try to defend it, it's just not funny.

dumb move by dumb kids, but let's not call in the federal troops just yet. Probably took all of 30 seconds for some drunks to put it there and another 30 seconds to remove the offending objects the next morning. If the media hadn't gotten hold of it the whole thing wouldn't amount to a hill of fake liberal outrage.

Come now. Why does everything have to be wrapped up this neat little partisan bow? Can't people just be offended about something because it was done in poor taste or bad judgement?

You've even acknowledged "dumb move by dumb kids" but then when people agree with you and explain how insensative that act was as well, now it's not that the kids did something foolish, it's that the people who are complaining about it are merely spewing their "liberal outrage"...?

Really?

I'm in no way calling for the kids to be prosecuted. That's for the college/university and law enforcement to decide. Again, I say look into their pattern of behavior with things like this before passing judgement. Regardless, we both agree this was a dumb thing to do on their part.
