This thread looks a little dangerous for me to quote the CON posters.
Let me compliment the Fraternity and University and move on.
The FRAT and UNIV have certainly moved on, and have an infinite amount of Class compared to this thread .

Let's say they went out drinking and drove home. Shouldn't they get punished for drunk driving, even if they're "college kids?"

The same people who moan about "personal responsibility" and "In my day, you didn't live with your parents when you were 20" are the ones who want to give them a pass because they're kids. Unbelievable.
Every time an incident like this happens folks come out in defense of the indefensable. People can all it a joke, a college prank if they wish, but placing a noose around the neck of a status that represents a Black person is racially motivated. Adding the Confederate Flag (or even a flag with a Confederate battle emblem on it) only puts and exclamation point on it! But the noose alone makes it a racist act. Now, the law defines what constitutes a "hate crime" and what doesn't. So, regardless of how we all "feel" or what we "think" about this act, we have to let the law be fairly and justly applied. But make no mistake; this was a racist act. A "prank" would have been draping the Meredith status in your rival school's colors. There's nothing funny about hanging a noose around anyone's neck and that includes that of a statue that depicts a Black figure.

Now, are the 3 youngsters racists? Judge by their pattern of behavior and not this one act. That said, it would be a shame if this one act of stupidity costs three young men their college education, but they'd only have themselves to blame.

I happen to be proud to live in a society in which despicable acts like this one come with serious consequences.

I hear you, and as another poster stated earlier in the thread "actions have consequences".

I can certainly understand how some folks would see this as a joke and degree "folks are getting their panties all up in a wad," but as I said a joke or prank would have been "neutral" or as neutral as possible so as not to offend others but to include others in on the humorous act. It's about taste and respect for others. This act was tasteless and was certainly offensive and not just to Blacks. Of course, I'm sure their defense will be "we were just kidding around," but let's be clear:

Hanging a noose around the neck of a status that represents a Black person doesn't insight humor. It insights disgust, fear, anxiety and in some cases anger.
    There's nothing humorous about this.

Yeah, and there's nothing humorous about making people wet themselves either, but I've still celophaned a few toilets and hooked a couple batteries to urinals in my past. Humor is subjective, and drunken frat humor even more so. Tasteless humor is a staple in modern society. Again, Jackass movies sell out at the box office, including the insipid Bad Grandpa. Remember when Borat was all the rage? How sick and sad was that? Was Ted Danson pulling a "racially motivated prank" when he went in blackface?

I'm glad they were caught and glad they were punished by school and fraternity code. I think it's silly to make a federal case out of it. Certainly there are cases of real and harmful racism folks can center their rage upon. The students pulled a stupid prank that turned the frat and the school against them.

dumb move by dumb kids, but let's not call in the federal troops just yet. Probably took all of 30 seconds for some drunks to put it there and another 30 seconds to remove the offending objects the next morning. If the media hadn't gotten hold of it the whole thing wouldn't amount to a hill of fake liberal outrage.

If there was no permanent damage because the objects were simply placed on the statue, I don't think it should be considered a crime, unless there was an intent to terrorize black students. Without that intent, it should be handled by the school, not the legal system. If there was an attempt to terrorize, its still a relatively minor crime akin to sending a threatening letter, with a possible hate crime enhancement. It sounds like the frat handled it appropriately.

And I do think suspending the fraternity's charter was a bridge too far.

Batteries to urinals? What's that about?

I knew some guys who pissed into another guy's dorm room humidifier.
